The 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees were recently announced. They include several bands that were active in the 60s: the Moody Blues, the Zombies, Judas Priest, the J. Geils Band, the Meters and MC5.
Other classic rock groups on the 2018 induction ballot are the Cars and Dire Straits. Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics and Radiohead are also nominated, in addition to iconic, now deceased artists Nina Simone, Link Wray and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The 19 acts span nearly a century of musical activity, since the oldest of them all, Tharpe, began singing and playing the guitar at the age of four in 1919.
Several of these artists have been nominated before on several occasions. It is, however, the first time for Bush, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, the Moody Blues, Radiohead, Simone, Tharpe and Wray.
According to Billboard, Radiohead has the best chance of receiving the highest number of votes. This is quite impressive, considering 2017 is the English band’s first year of eligibility. Artists become eligible for a nomination 25 years after the release of their debut album. Fans have been allowed to vote since 2012, making it much more likely for bands with a large following to be chosen. A minimum of five nominees are inducted to the Hall of Fame each year.
Billboard set the odds at 2 to 1 for Bon Jovi, 3 to 1 for the Cars, 4 to 1 for the Zombies and MC5, and 5 to 1 for Nina Simone and Depeche Mode. The Meters and Tharpe are tied in last place at 1 to 15. Tharpe has a better chance at being inducted in the “Early Influences” category, which was established by the Hall of Fame in order to honour the work of artists from eras preceding rock ‘n’ roll.
The 2017 inductees included the Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam and Yes. Inductees are honoured at an annual ceremony held alternately in New York and at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Before this year, the ceremonies rotated between Cleveland, New York and Los Angeles.
