Eagles – 49ers (11-17) : San Francisco a pris son temps

34

Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) – San Francisco 49ers (2-0) : 11-17

Lighter and Softer

22

The light twin of Darker and Edgier, when something is Tone Shifted to be more family friendly and frothy than the original source. This can either happen to a show over time, or it can be the result of deliberate Executive Meddling. It could be a deliberate throwback to a pre-Cerebus Syndrome incarnation. Thus, a Lighter And Softer reboot may often follow an incarnation which made a point of being Darker and Edgier. Finally, if an adult or more serious TV show or movie has a spin-off aimed at children, this can be the result. Just like its brother extreme, Lighter and Softer can leave just as bad of a taste in longtime fans’ mouths as Darker and Edgier if handled poorly.

At its most extreme it can turn a previously vibrant cast into Flat Characters and remove a lot of the show’s appeal or even cause fans to abandon the work entirely. If it shoehorns Black-and-White Morality into the work and makes everyone clear heroes and villains, then expect people to complain about the loss of subtlety in the setting, or feel like the writers are talking down to them.

In music, this may result in an artist merely recording a Surprisingly Gentle Song, or it could lead to the artist having a complete Genre Shift to a lighter genre.

Often found alongside Denser and Wackier, and Younger and Hipper. Also often signaled by an increase in wacky humor.

Just like with Darker and Edgier, please keep in mind that Tropes Are Tools. When something is lighter and softer than its initial source material, it doesn’t mean it’s automatically worse. It usually depends on who creates/writes said material as well as how subtly they make the transition. Executive Meddling may of course be at fault; “We gotta appeal to the kids!” But other reasons include trying to be more mainstream, to change an unpopular run, to appeal to another demographic, to recognize and dispel Too Bleak, Stopped Caring etc. The Lighter And Softer run can end up being positively remembered for years to come. It just depends on who’s behind the product and how they execute it.

Compare Bowdlerise, Disneyfication, Menace Decay, Badass Decay, Reverse Cerebus Syndrome, W.A.F.F., Denser and Wackier and Tamer and Chaster.

Contrast Darker and Edgier, Bloodier and Gorier, Cerebus Syndrome and Hotter and Sexier.

Real Life

  • Major League Baseball opened the 1998 season with two new teams, both named after incredibly deadly animals – the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. While the Diamondbacks are much less threatening than their name implies, the Devil Rays changed their name to the Rays in 2007, the name now describing rays of sunshine rather than dangerous marine life. Oddly, ever since then they’ve been extremely good. It was also changed due to Moral Guardians (and reportedly former Ray Josh Hamilton, who became a born-again Christian after kicking drug addiction) thinking that the name promoted Satanism.

  • Some grandparents are accused of this by their children.
  • A lot of people will describe college like this to high-school students, especially those who didn’t care for high school and are afraid college will be more of the same. They mention that while the work will be more difficult, the environment will be a lot more pleasant, since everybody is there by choice, and there’s a lot less bullying and teasing going on.
  • The ’80s is this compared to the ’60s and ’70s, the ’90s would do the same thing to the ’80s, and, to a degree, some aspects of The New ’10s could be this compared to the 2000s

2014 Gear Trials: Best Hybrids | 60S Today

19

In nearly every golfer’s bag, there’s a yardage gap between two irons that’s a little closer together than it should be. It’s most common in the long irons, where golfers often hit two different clubs almost the same distance. A golfer might be able to carry his 4 iron 190 yards, but for the life of him he just can’t get his 3 iron to fly more than 192 yards. That, loyal GolfWRX readers, is the reason for hybrids, which are designed to hit the ball higher, farther and are more forgiving than the long irons they replace.

This year’s 2014 Gear Trials: Best Hybrids list highlights hybrids that are extremely long, which we have labeled “Distance-First,” as well as clubs that are extremely accurate, which we labeled “Forgiveness-First.” Our “Balanced-Performance” category rewards hybrids that are both long and accurate, which we think will be the sweet spot of hybrid design for most golfers.

Do yourself a favor and spend some time hitting a few of the models on the list to see if your longest iron is really worth all the trouble it has caused you. Maybe you’re the kind of golfer who prefers a 5 wood over a similarly lofted hybrid, and that’s fine because you’re in good company. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy enjoy hitting their 19-degree fairway woods much more than a 19-degree hybrid.

Our testing, however, indicated that many golfers could benefit from one, two or maybe even three hybrids in their bag, which will give them the consistent distance gaps between their shortest wood and longest iron that can help them get their handicaps trending downward.

Who votes?

In our past best clubs list, we relied on both the feedback of our equipment editors and an elite panel of custom fitters located across North America. For this year’s list, we decided we needed another component: mass player testing of every major manufacturer’s hybrids performed by fitters at Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti, Mich. Those fitters spent eight days with 33 different testers of various ability levels evaluating a total of 23 different hybrids. Each hybrid was tested with its stock stiff-flex shaft and had as close to 19 degrees of loft as possible. The data was then normalized by the team at Miles of Golf in order to rank each hybrid’s launch, spin and smash factor.

After the data was collected, we surveyed our five other top custom fitters located across North America — Carl’s Golfland, Modern Golf, Morton Golf and two other custom fitters who chose to remain anonymous on the top performing hybrids in each category.

The scoring process

Unlike in year’s past, this year’s scores were entirely based on the performance of each hybrid, removing the subjective categories of looks, sound and feel from the equation. What was left was the votes of our custom fitters (60 percent of a hybrid’s score), the results of our mass player test (30 percent of a hybrid’s score) and the votes of our staff members (10 percent of a hybrid’s score).

Now that we’ve added up the scores, we present to you our list of the absolute best hybrids in golf. We consider each of these hybrids to be a winner, which is why they’re listed in alphabetical order (Note: You can click the images of each hybrid to enlarge the text).

Distance

hybrids_distance Listed in alphabetic order

If your longest iron isn’t carrying far enough, chances are it’s not staying in the air long enough. That’s where hybrids can really change a golfer’s long game. Compared to an average long iron, a properly fit hybrid will in most cases launch the ball higher and with more ball speed, keeping it in the air longer for more carry distance.

These Distance-First hybrids are the best we’ve found at maximizing ball speed and they tend to spin less than other models on this list. That makes them a good fit for better golfers who have struggled to control the trajectory of higher-lofted fairway woods, as well as those who simply want to play the longest hybrids they can get their hands on.

Adams Pro Hybrid Distance

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: Adams’ Pro lineup includes three hybrids: the Pro, the Pro Mini and the Pro DHy. The Pro is the most well-rounded of the line, with the largest profile that offers the most forgiveness of the three hybrids. And when it’s properly fit, it’s usually the longest of the three clubs as well.

The Pro includes Adams’ patented upside-down head shape, as well as two slots — one on the crown, one on the sole — that improve spring-like effect across the hybrid’s ultra-thin 455 carpenter steel face. It also has a low, neutral center of gravity (CG) that makes the hybrid fairly low spinning and gives golfers a chance to hit both draws and fades.

The Pro is available in lofts of 16, 18, 20, 23 and 26 degrees and comes stock with Aldila’s Tour Red shaft.

Adams XTD Ti Gear Trials Hybrids Distance

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: Adams wants golfers to #ownthesecondshot, and the XTD Ti is yet another hybrid in the company’s expansive line that will help some golfers do just that. If you’re looking to add distance to your hybrid game, this is probably going to be your longest option as long as the spin numbers fall in the appropriate range.

The XTD Ti is so hot, Adams claims, that the company had to slow down its titanium face to make it conform to the USGA’s limitation on spring-like effect. Like the Pro, the XTD Ti has two of Adams slots — one on the crown and on the sole — that work with the club’s brazed titanium face to create some of the fastest balls speeds we saw from a hybrid in testing.

The XTD Ti is offered in lofts of 16, 18, 20, 23 and 26 degrees, and comes stock with Matrix’s HQ3 “Red Tie” Hybrid shaft, which weighs about 90 grams. It’s adjustable to +/- 1.5 degrees of its printed loft.

Callaway X2 Hot Gear Trials Hybrids Distance

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: The votes we received from our club fitters for the Gear Trials: Best Hybrids category were a little more diverse than the tally from our driver and fairway wood lists, but they all had one thing in common: each custom fitter voted Callaway’s X2 Hot hybrids as one of the best lineups in 2014.

The X2 Hot and X2 Hot Pro look very different at address, but they reigned supreme in their categories thanks to the their Hyper Speed Cup Faces, which our panel said produced some of the fastest ball speeds they’ve ever seen from all-steel hybrids.

The X2 Hot (available in lofts of 19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees) is larger and more forgiving, and comes stock with a higher-launching Aldila Tour Blue proprietary hybrid shaft that weighs about 60 grams.

The X2 Hot Pro (available in lofts of 16, 18, 20 and 23 degrees) is considerably more compact for more versatility from less-than-ideal lies. It launches lower and spins less than the X2 Hot, making it a good fit for high-speed players. It comes stock with a lower-launching Aldila Tour Green Hybrid shaft that weighs about 75 grams.

TaylorMade SLDR Gear Trials Hybrids Distance

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: TaylorMade’s SLDR hybrids have been a game changer for many high-speed golfers who have always wanted to play a hybrid instead of a 2 or 3 iron, but struggled to find a model that lowered their spin to an acceptable range.

TaylorMade created the SLDR’s low-spin launch conditions with its low, forward CG strategy, which works with the company’s Speed Pocket to provide faster ball speeds and a higher launch angle, particularly for better players who hit the sweet spot consistently. The hybrids also have a 3-degree adjustable hosel, which will be useful to golfers who want to dial in their launch conditions for specific course conditions.

The adjustability also serves as an insurance policy for golfers who don’t heed TaylorMade’s advice to loft up, giving them a 1.5-degree margin of error should they not buy a model with enough loft. Remember, the SLDR’s extremely low-spin launch conditions allow most golfers to play a hybrid that has 2-or-more degrees of additional loft, allowing them to launch their shots higher with less spin, paydirt for those who are looking to hit their hybrids farther.

The SLDR hybrids are available in lofts of 17, 19, 21 and 24 degrees with Fujikura’s Speeder 82H shaft (R, S and X flexes). A pricer TP model is also available, which comes with Fujikura’s stouter Motore Speeder 9.3H shaft in S and X flexes.

TaylorMade SLDR S Hybrid Gear Trials

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: Consider TaylorMade’s SLDR S a friendlier SLDR, with a little wider footprint and shallower face that helps golfers launch the clubs a little higher than the originals. Our testing revealed that the SLDR S hybrids are similar to the company’s JetSpeed models, but their lighter head weights, as well as their lighter and shorter shafts led to improved consistency from our testers.

Like the SLDR hybrids, the SLDR S hybrids are really long and low-spinning thanks to their low, forward CG and hot faces, which are made hotter and more consistent with the company’s Speed Pocket, a handlebar-shaped slot on the front of the sole.

The SLDR S hybrids are not adjustable, making a proper fit all-the-more important. They come in lofts of 19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees with Fujikura’s Speeder 72H shafts in M, R and S flexes.

Forgiveness

hybrids_forgiveness Listed in alphabetic order

Golfers with average or below average swing speeds tend to have the most problems with their long irons. This Forgiveness-First list was created almost exclusively for them, and is filled with high-launching, forgiving hybrids that can give them a huge boost of confidence once they move outside short-iron range.

Even if you have a swing speed that’s above average, a little extra forgiveness never hurt anyone. After all, it’s not about how far you hit your hybrids, but how consistently you hit them. That’s why you’ll find many of these Forgiveness-First hybrids in the bags of everyone from high handicappers to low handicappers and even some of the best players in the world.

Adams Idea Hybrid 2014 Gear Trials Forgiveness

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: Adams calls its Idea hybrid its “easiest to hit hybrid” and our fitters agree. Like the company’s Pro and XTD Ti models, the Idea has an upside-down head design and uses two slots — one in the crown and one in the sole — to increase launch angle, ball speed and consistency on off-center hits.

With the Idea, however, Adams moved the CG considerably lower and deeper in the head, helping golfers hit these clubs higher. Unlike Distance-First hybrids, the Idea is designed to launch shots with a little more spin. That helps golfers with slower club head speeds achieve a higher peak trajectory that allows shots to land softer on the green and stop closer to their pitch mark.

The Idea hybrids are offered in lofts of 16.5, 19, 22, 25, 28 and 32 degrees with Mitsubishi Rayon’s Bassara Eagle shaft in S, R and A flexes.

Callaway X2 Hot Gear Trials Hybrids Forgiveness

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: Nike’s Covert 2.0 and 2.0 Tour hybrids have what Nike calls a “linear transition design.” What that means is the lower-lofted hybrids have larger heads for more forgiveness, while the higher-lofted hybrids have smaller heads for more versatility and workability.

That design and their unique cavity back on the rear of their soles makes the Covert 2.0 and 2.0 Tour hybrids two of the most forgiving hybrids in golf, and their NexCore faces with variable face thickness delivers faster ball speeds than their predecessors.

The Covert 2.0 is Nike’s higher-spinning model, and comes stock with Mitsubishi Rayon’s Kuro Kage 2.0 Black 70 shaft (A, R and S Flexes) in lofts of 17, 20, 23 and 26 degrees. The Covert 2.0 Tour is designed for golfers who need a little less spin. It comes stock with Mitsubishi Rayon’s Kuro Kage 2.0 Silver TiNi shaft in two models:

  • a 3 hybrid that’s adjustable from 17-to-21 degrees.
  • a 4 hybrid that adjusts from 21-to-25 degrees.

The FlexLoft hosel on the Covert 2.0 Tour allows golfers to adjust loft as much as 5 degrees in 1-degree increments, and each setting pairs independently with one of three face angles: left (closed), neutral (square) and right (open). If aesthetics are your thing, it’s hard to beat what many of our testers called the prettiest hybrids in golf, and allowing golfers to adjust their face angle independent of loft is also a nice touch.

Ping G25 Hybrids Gear Trials Forgiveness

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: If you’ve read our Gear Trials: Drivers and Gear Trials: Fairway Woods lists, you’ve likely noticed a trend. Ping’s G25 line has been a mainstay of our “Forgiveness-First” and “Balanced-Performance” categories, and the G25 hybrids are no exception.

The G25 hybrids are designed with a low, rearward center of gravity that makes them the most-forgiving models on this list. They’re particularly good on mishits on the heel and toe, our fitters noticed, helping those shots fly almost as far and as straight as shots hit on the center of the face.

In the lower lofts (17 and 20 degrees), the G25 hybrids are designed to be extremely high launching, but in the higher lofts, (23, 37 and 31 degrees) Ping engineers moved the CG of the clubs slightly more forward to remove excess spin. If you like the forgiveness of the G25 hybrids but find that they spin too much for you, Ping also offers its i25 hybrids, which retain most of the G25’s forgiveness and have a slightly lower-launching, lower-spinning trajectory.

The G25 hybrids come stock with Ping’s TFC 189F stock shaft in Soft R, R, S, Tour-Stiff and Tour X-Stiff flexes.

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: The 913H is a favorite of many PGA Tour players for many reasons, but what the hybrid does best is deliver consistent distance on shots hit across the clubface, and it’s particularly impressive on shots hit below the sweet spot.

The 913H has a low, neutral center of gravity that helps better golfers work the ball either left-to-right or right-to-left. Golfers looking for a lower-spinning trajectory might try the 913H.d, which is about 15cc smaller and has slightly more offset than the 913H.

Both clubs have Titleist’s adjustable Sure-Fit hosel, which allows golfers to adjust the loft and lie angle of the hybrid as much as 1.5 degrees in 0.75-degree increments. The 913H is available in lofts of 17, 19, 21, 24 and 27 degrees. The 913H.d comes in lofts of 18, 20 and 23 degrees.

The 913H and 913H.d are available with a myriad of shaft options from Aldila and Mitsubishi Rayon, and many custom shafts are also available for an extra charge.[/colored_box]

Balanced Performance

Hybrids_balanced Listed in alphabetic order

You’ll notice some carryover from the Distance-First and Forgiveness-First categories in this list, which is by design. That’s because these six hybrids: Adams’ Pro, Callaway’s X2 Hot and X2 Hot Pro, Ping’s Anser, G25 and TaylorMade’s SLDR S bring an enviable amount of both distance and forgiveness to the table.

Unless you already know you need something special, like the spin-killing performance of our Distance-First hybrids or the added forgiveness of our Forgiveness-First hybrids, this is the list you should use to start your testing.

Adams Pro Hybrid Balanced

Ping Anser Hybrid Gear Trials Balanced

[colored_box color=”white”]Tech Talk: Ping’s Anser hybrid was released in July 2012, making it old enough to fall under the “classic hybrids” tab on Ping’s website. Yet two years later, the club is still one of the best performing hybrids in golf.

Like Ping’s G25 hybrids, the Anser uses progressive CG positions (the CG is farther back in the lower lofts and farther forward in the higher lofts) to give golfers a mid-launching, mid-spinning trajectory. It’s not the longest hybrid in golf by any means, as our custom fitters noted, but it has all the forgiveness you’d expect from a Ping hybrid, especially on shots hit high and low on the clubface. The Anser is also easy for better players to work left-to-right or right-to-left, and its turf interaction is impressive from a variety of lies.

If you’re into Ping hybrids, choosing one from this list can be as simple as this:

  • Tend to miss shots on the heel and toe? You’re probably a good fit for the G25.
  • Tend to miss shots high and low on the face? You’re probably a good fit for the Anser.

The Anser hybrids come stock with Ping’s TFC 800H shaft in soft regular, regular, stiff and x-stiff flexes, and the shafts weigh between 74 and 88 grams depending on flex.[/colored_box]

Ballotpedia survey responses

See also: Ballotpedia’s school board candidate survey

Robert Russell Speth participated in Ballotpedia’s 2017 survey of school board candidates.[11] In response to the question “What do you hope to achieve if elected to the school board?” the candidate stated on October 29, 2017:

“ First and foremost restore a sense of balance to the board. Our board currently votes in a 7-0 fashion on every issue of importance. Second, bring a parent based viewpoint to the board as I have two children in DPS (elementary and middle). Third, renew focus on helping our neighborhood schools vs. closing them. Fourth, support our teachers in their chosen profession and ensure that we have School of Education educated teachers in our classrooms working with our children. Fifth and finally, focus on getting the needed resources into our classrooms to support both our students and teachers. We are 12 years into focusing on privatizing our district as a solution to everything and the results simply are not there. We now have 60 out of 200 schools operating as privatized entities. Our graduation rates are in the bottom 10% of US major metros, our achievement gaps are at historic highs (approaching 40%) and only 39% of our students are reading at proficient or advanced levels. In short, its time for a change![12][13] ”

Ranking the issues

The candidate was asked to rank the following issues based on how they should be prioritized by the school board, with 1 being the most important and 7 being the least important. Each ranking could only be used once.

Education policy Click here to learn more about education policy in Colorado. Education on the ballot Issue importance ranking Candidate’s ranking Issue 1 Closing the achievement gap 2 Expanding arts education 3 Improving education for special needs students 4 Improving relations with teachers 5 Improving post-secondary readiness 6 Balancing or maintaining the district’s budget 7 Expanding school choice options “ Ranking these issues from a first to last perspective is almost impossible. In reality, all of these issues are a 1 or 2 from my perspective, namely highly important.[13] ” —Robert Russell Speth (October 29, 2017)

Positions on the issues

The candidate was asked to answer eight questions from Ballotpedia regarding significant issues in education and the school district. The questions are highlighted in blue and followed by the candidate’s responses. Some questions provided multiple choices, which are noted after those questions. The candidate was also provided space to elaborate on their answers to the multiple choice questions.

Should new charter schools be approved in your district? (Not all school boards are empowered to approve charter schools. In those cases, the candidate was directed to answer the question as if the school board were able to do so.) No. In Denver we have a district with 60 out of 200 schools already privatized. Additionally, we have 14 more charters that were approved just this year by a 7-0 vote from our current board. It is time for us to hit the pause button on the approval of new charters in the city of Denver. If there is a true community driven request for a charter that is meeting a very specific need, requested with genuine support from the community, I would be open to considering the application from a one off perspective. Which statement best describes the ideal relationship between the state government and the school board? The state should always defer to school board decisions, defer to school board decisions in most cases, be involved in the district routinely or only intervene in severe cases of misconduct or mismanagement. The state should only intervene in severe cases of misconduct or mismanagement. Are standardized tests an accurate metric of student achievement? No. Simply put, no. As a society we have become fixated on forcing our children to take standardized tests in order to rank our teachers and schools. Just this year, my son took tests for 11 days across 3 weeks. Doing the math, this means he will spend 1 full year of is K-12 education taking standardized tests. This is not serving him, or society as a whole. It is high time we rightsize our testing regimen. Additionally, trying to distill a given student’s achievements by how well they perform on standardized tests is doing them a disservice, particularly impacting our English Language Learners. How should the district handle underperforming teachers? Terminate their contract before any damage is done to students, offer additional training options, put them on a probationary period while they seek to improve or set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district? Set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district. Should teachers receive merit pay? No. Merit pay is something we have attempted to translate over from the private sector to the public school system. Typically the implementation of merit pay has been linked to student test performance and/or school performance based on test scores. This approach has not yielded positive results in DPS and it has in many cases frustrated teachers who are doing their very best, sometimes in extremely challenging environments. If this method of ranking teachers is to continue, we should scale it back to bring down stress levels within our teaching staff. 12 years into this approach and we continue to have the highest teacher turnover in the metro area. Should the state give money to private schools through a voucher system or scholarship program? No. How should expulsion be used in the district? I believe it is our job to find pathways for all students to reach their full potential. In-school suspension and re-engagement is a better path for students who need time away from the regular classroom so that they can continue learning. We should be using out of school suspensions and expulsions as the very last resort. At the same time, we cannot lose sight of every students right to learn in a safe and effective classroom setting. What’s the most important factor for success in the classroom: student-teacher ratio, the curriculum, teachers, parent involvement or school administration? Student-teacher ratio. Again, there are many factors which are leading factors in success in the classroom. I would rank all of these listed as 1 or 2 in importance.

Speth highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:

Why I’m Running

I’m a parent, not a politician.

My wife, Kristen and I have two children, ages 10 and 12. Our son attends Escuela Valdez, and our daughter attends Lake International, both in Northwest Denver.

I became increasingly involved with Denver Public Schools in 2011 when I was nominated by the Valdez leadership team to spearhead the effort to secure 2012 General Obligation Bond (GOB) funds to renovate our school and bring it up to modern standards. Through my involvement with this project and the formation of a partnership with several DPS board members, Valdez was able to lead the charge to convince the Board of Education to allocate $22 million from the 2012 General Obligation Bond funds to address not just the Valdez “open design” issues, but those at other “open designed” schools: Swansea, Southmoor, Samuels, Cheltenham, Centennial, Kaiser, Eagleton and Bromwell. This was truly a city-wide win.

Since that time, I have remained involved with DPS and have had the chance to meet many parents, teachers, and community members from all areas of the city. In 2015 I ran for the at-large seat and came within 800 votes – out of close to 120,000 votes cast – of defeating the incumbent. During my years of involvement I have seen a repeated pattern of DPS implementing changes that communities do not want. The District and the Board have demonstrated little leadership or problem solving capabilities when it comes to educating ALL of Denver’s children. And with their alignment with federal policies, there appears to be little hope much will change with them in charge.

I want to be the voice for those who have been not heard.

The current school board has simply been a rubber stamp, approving every single DPS and Board of Education recommendation since 2013. This way of doing business has, often been made with no serious debate, leaving many communities frustrated and distrustful, and has led me to the conclusion that I must step forward to try and bring the often ignored community voice and perspective to the board.

There is no silver bullet. It takes hard work and a passion for transformative results. I know we can work together to do better for our students![13]

Chalkbeat Colorado survey

Speth participated in the following survey conducted by Chalkbeat Colorado. The survey questions appear bolded, and Speth’s responses follow below.

Tell us a bit about yourself. How long have you lived in the school district? What do you do for a living?

“ I’ve lived in Denver since 1999 and am originally from Madison, Wisconsin. I have a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.S. from the Materials Science Program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. I have worked for a variety of technology companies ranging Intel to, most recently, Sprint. I am currently between roles and am using this time to focus 100% of my efforts on winning the election for the Denver Public School Board.[13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

Tell us about your connection to the school district.

“ I have two young children in DPS today: my son Russell attending Escuela Valdez and my daughter Jacqueline attending Lake Middle School. My wife and I have volunteered for many activities over the years, my personal favorite being the after-school science enrichment program at Valdez. While at Valdez, I was one of the parents that lobbied hard to have some of the 2012 bond funds allocated to traditional neighborhood schools to provide for open classroom design remediation. This effort spanned almost five years and opened my eyes to some of the politics currently driving DPS. This effort resulted in a $22 million modification to the 2012 bond and benefited the following schools: Swansea, Cheltenham, Southmoor, Samuels, Centennial, Eagleton, Valdez, Kaiser and Bromwell. I ran for the board two years ago because I believe in DPS and I believe DPS can do so much more for our children. I lost that election by 0.82 percent, and it was the result of hundreds of thousands of dollars of out-of-state super PAC money coming into the race against me. I sincerely ask that you pay attention to where all the money is coming from in this year’s school board election and just how much money is being spent to get your vote. School board races should be about policy, not who has the support of the most super PAC funds. I look forward to serving as your next school board member at-large![13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

The school board adopted a policy that calls for closing or replacing low-performing schools. Do you agree with it? Is there anything you’d change?

“ DPS is spending an inordinate amount of time forcing our children to take standardized tests. My son had 12 standardized testing days over the course of three weeks this year. Test data is massaged to create the SPF (School Performance Framework) and schools are labeled blue through red. Once a school is rated red, it’s like being branded with a scarlet letter, triggering parents look elsewhere. The SPF is wielded like a saber to determine which schools should be closed, and closure typically results in the school building being handed to a privatized operator. The current DPS policy of two years in red and you are targeted for closure is now being applied as if it is the law. Frankly, I am shocked at the callousness of this policy. We should be helping our schools, not closing them. That is what the new Jeffco superintendent is doing, and the recent study out of Stanford that clearly demonstrates closing schools does not work. The district’s performance shows that after 12 years of these (failed) policies, only 39 percent of the students in DPS are reading at or above grade level. Let’s decrease testing and help our schools. It’s time for a change![13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

There are over 200 public schools in Denver. More than half are charter and innovation schools, which operate with increased autonomy. What are your thoughts about the district’s “portfolio” approach?

“ It’s consuming a lot of resources and not yielding results. Our key performance indicators have not improved over the past 12 years. We have the largest achievement gap between students using Free and Reduced Lunch programs and those that do not. Our graduation rates are in the bottom ten percent of all major metros and our reading and math proficiency rates are, on average, dismal. Our children deserve better![13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

How should DPS rate schools? What factors should be taken into account and how much weight should they be given? Do you agree with adding an “equity indicator” that bases ratings partly on how well schools are educating traditionally underserved students?

“ Honestly, at this point, I do not think DPS should be summing up the entirety of a school by a color code. I have two points of experience on this. One is outlined in response to the next question, and the other is a recent experience at one of our neighborhood elementary schools, Escuela Valdez. When we started, Valdez was rated “red” by DPS’ SPF system. We went anyway. Why? In short, because we as parents and a community believed that the system was completely missing what was actually happening at the school. Lo and behold, the school steadily improved on the color coding scheme and we achieved “green.” Then one year our rating dropped to “yellow!” Gasp! Parents could be heard asking, “Is our school in trouble? Should we leave now!?” But here’s the thing. We changed nothing and a year later we had returned to “green.” We continued to deliver the same program as when we were red or green. Let’s take all the money we’re spending on testing and color coding schools and get that money into the classrooms! You want to know how a school is doing, go talk to the parents, teachers and principals.[13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

Denver is gentrifying, and the district has formed a committee to investigate how those changes are impacting schools. What policies would you consider to combat the segregation and decreasing enrollment occurring in some schools?

“ I would point to the successes we are seeing around the district today as it pertains to having ALL of our students attending their neighborhood schools. Successes like GW, East, Skinner and Valdez. In so many cases, schools are labeled an SPF color by DPS, triggering parents of means to take their children to schools halfway across town versus embracing their neighborhood schools. How many parents are going to look at a school DPS has rated “red” and send their children there, knowing DPS has an ironclad policy to close schools if they are red for two years in a row? The SPF has been morphed into a negative marketing scare tactic, used to frighten parents away from a school and open a pathway to privatization. Case in point: our home sits between our remaining neighborhood middle schools, Lake and Skinner. Even though Lake was 96 percent children of color, 95 percent free and reduced lunch and rated “red” by the school board, we investigated the school, spoke with the principal and teachers and decided we believed in Lake and the community. Our daughter is in her second year there, she is thriving and could not be happier. WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER!!![13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

What is DPS doing particularly well right now?

“ Largely through the passage of the 2012 mill levy, Denver has increased access to ECE which has long-term benefits to children that are able to participate. Studies have shown that being exposed to the basics early in life can have a truly lasting impact. Additionally, DPS has implemented a new program to attract teachers of color to Denver Public Schools, Mark Your Mark. While in its infancy, this program is a step in the right direction, with over 75 percent of our students being children of color while less than 25 percent of our teachers are teachers of color. Having at least one black teacher in the third through fifth grades reduced a black student’s probability of dropping out of school by 29 percent, according to a new study from researchers at American University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, Davis. Clearly this is an initiative that we need to continue to support.[13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

What is the most pressing thing the board should change?

“ Stop closing schools. We need to stop closing schools and start helping them. This focus our 7-0 board has on school closure coupled with approving charters without defined locations atomizes communities and creates a lot of anxiety for the families and students of Denver. Hitting the pause button on school closure is the first thing the new Jeffco superintendent did upon arrival. As mentioned previously, the newly released Stanford study clearly indicates closing schools does not yield results. DPS is a poster child for this reality. We are 12 years into a program of school closure coupled with privatizing education and the results are in. It’s officially not working. We are still in the bottom 10 percent of major metropolitan school districts as it pertains to graduation rates and achievement gaps. Our average reading proficiency rates are dreadful. We need to focus on reducing our administrative overhead and get those dollars back into the classrooms.[13] ” —Robert Speth (2017)[15]

The 5 Best Slip On Golf Shoes In 2020 [For Men & Women]

19

Looking to buy a new pair of slip on golf shoes?

We’ve got you covered.

In this guide we’ve picked out the best slip on golf shoes from this year’s line ups.

But before we get to the shoes, let’s quickly answer a couple of questions…

What is a slip on golf shoe?

A slip on golf shoe is designed for you to be able to slip it on and off without untying the laces. In fact, some slip on golf shoes (like the adidas Adicross SL) don’t even have laces.

So yeah, the clue is in the name.

Why would you want a pair of slip on golf shoes?

Well if you’re like me (constantly running late for your tee time), a slip on golf shoe will save you a couple of minutes before each round. Basically, they’re convenient.

And they’ll also stop you wrecking the heel of your shoe by trying to squeeze your feet into tied golf shoes (mea culpa).

So now we know what they are and why you want them…. let’s look at the best slip on golf shoes available right now.

The 3 best slip on golf shoes for men

Slip on golf shoes are fairly new, so you won’t find a huge selection.

But fortunately, 2 of the world’s best golf shoe brands (Footjoy and adidas) both have slip on options.

Let’s start with our #1 pick from Footjoy.

1. FootJoy Men’s Superlites XP

footjoy superlites

At first glance, the FootJoy Men’s Superlites XP might not look like slip on golf shoes. But that’s exactly what they are.

You’ll notice that the laces don’t go all the way up to the top, which allows you to wiggle your feet in with ease.

And these aren’t just great slip on golf shoes… they’re great golf shoes, period.

The soft moulded (spikeless) rubber traction on the soul offers excellent grip, which will be more than sufficient for driver swing speeds up to around 115mph. Above that (hello Bryson) we’d recommend going for the extra grip of soft spikes.

They’re trainer like and comfortable. And they’re also waterproof for keeping your feet dry on soggy golf courses.

If you’re looking for the best slip on golf shoes this year, FootJoy Men’s Superlites XP are our recommendation.

Buy them here.

2. adidas Men’s Adicross SL Golf Shoe

adidas adicross SL slip on golf shoes

These look more “slip on” than the FootJoy and might be more in line with what you expected to see when you started searching.

No laces here, and you’ll be able to slip them on and off in seconds.

Adidas make great golf shoes. And while you might sacrifice a little traction with the Adicross SL, for dry courses they’ll probably be sufficient to keep you planted.

The adidas adicross SL look comfortable, and well… they are.

This is about as trainer like as a golf shoe gets. And a lightweight “CloudFoam” sock liner provides even more cushioning.

The perfect slip on golf shoes for casual rounds.

Buy them here.

3. FootJoy Men’s Club Casuals Buckle Loafers

footjoy club casuals

If you’re looking for a more dress like slip on golf shoe, then the FootJoy Club Casuals Loafers will look the part both on the course and in the club house.

They’re made from full grain leather, with a synthetic sole.

And while they might not look like actual golf shoes, trust us, they are. The sole uses FootJoy’s proprietary DuraMax rubber compound to offer decent grip and traction.

Again, we’d probably recommend wearing these for casual rounds rather than tournament play. But if you want a pair of golf shoes that you can wear to the office, then head straight out onto the golf course with, then these are an excellent choice.

Not the cheapest golf shoes around, but they’ve got to be the smartest!

Buy them here.

The 2 best slip on golf shoes for women

Lots of best golf shoe guides ignore women. We don’t.

So here are our top 2 picks for women’s slip on golf shoes this year.

1. FootJoy Women’s Leisure Slip-on Golf Shoes

footjoy leisure slip on golf shoes for women

Again, FootJoy is our top pick.

And again, their slip on shoes for women are all-round great golf shoes.

They’re waterproof, comfortable, and breathable with excellent grip and traction courtesy of a DuraMax sole.

And the pull tab at the back makes them super easy to slip on and off before and after a round.

Buy them here.

2. Puma Women’s Tustin Golf Shoe

puma tustin

A no frills appearance, but a super comfortable golf shoe.

Puma Tustin are as slip on as you can get, looking more like gym shoes than golf shoes.

But there’s hidden traction in the sole, which should be plenty for dry conditions and casual rounds.

A good pair of golf shoes for carrying in your bag in case you suddenly get the urge to grab a quick 9 holes after work.

But for more serious golf, we’d probably go with the FootJoys.

Buy them here.

Looking for more golf shoe options?

That rounds it up for our pick of this year’s best slip on golf shoes.

There’s not a huge selection at the moment. But we’re expecting more golf brands to introduce slip on options over the next few years, so we’ll be sure to update our guide when they do.

And in the meantime, head over to our guide to this year’s best golf shoe brands if you need a little more choice.
