Master of the Amateurs set to soar at Royal Melbourne

The Australian Master of the Amateurs is set to climb to new heights next week, with a world class international field battling for supremacy on Australia’s premier golf course, Royal Melbourne.

Australia’s top-ranked amateur title, which has been a proving ground for the likes of US PGA Tour stars Jason Day and Rickie Fowler, has once again attracted some of the best amateurs in the world to pit their skills against the cream of Australia and New Zealand.

A total of 54 players from 11 countries will compete over four days of stroke play – from Tuesday, January 11 to Friday January 14.

The Master of the Amateurs World Cup will also be decided between teams comprising two players from each country.

The countries represented will be Australia, USA, New Zealand, England, Korea, Japan, China, Singapore, Italy, Fiji and Vanuatu.

The Am-Pro will be played on Monday, January 10 and feature top professionals playing alongside the amateurs and celebrities.

The tournament which is being played on Royal Melbourne’s west course, will give

spectators a great chance to see up close some of the game’s future stars and also get a sneak preview of the venue for the 2011 Presidents Cup, which will be played on the composite course in mid-November.

Play starts at 8.30 a.m each day. Entry is free.

Here’s a selection of stars from the Master of the Amateurs field:

American DAVID MCDANIEL, who hails from Tucson, Arizona, is ranked in the world’s top 10 amateurs, was runner-up in the prestigious 2010 US Public Links championship and winner of the 2010 Arizona Public Links title.

A top-flight performer in US ranks, he’s a little different to your normal American product.

He never played college golf, preferring to hone his game at public courses while playing skins with his mates.

He’s also pretty laid back when it comes to footwear – he wears tennis shoes on the course rather than spikes. “They are more comfortable,” he says.

He joins Harry Rudolph III, Jordan Russell and Bhavik Patel in another powerful US combination.

#US-based Queenslander TARQUIN MacMANUS brings to Royal Melbourne a game that has been finely-honed at the University of Arizona.

As with Australian PGA Tour star, Adam Scott, McManus chose early on in his junior career to improve his golf through the US college system.

He believes his decision to leave his home in Cairns three years ago and head to the toughest proving ground in junior golf was the best possible move.

Last season he led the stroke average in Arizona events and was the leading Arizona player in seven of 12 events.

His runner-up finish at the 2010 Asian amateur championship in Japan provided another glimpse of his burgeoning talent. His performance gave him a berth into final qualifying for the 2011 British Open at Royal St Georges.

Italian teenager DOMENICO GEMINIANI might be only 14 but already he’s being tipped to follow the path of fellow-countryman, Matteo Manassero.

At 16, Manassero made the cut at the 2010 US Masters and then, having turned 17, became the youngest winner on the European PGA Tour, at the Castello Masters in Spain.

Geminiani, who was born on the Caribbean island of Martinique and now lives in Florida with his family, is being guided by the likes of famed US-based coach, David Leadbetter and has mental and fitness coaches on his team.

In physical stature, Geminiani is already a stand-out. At 185 cm (6ft. 1 in.) and 88 kg (11st. 8 lbs.), he strides the fairways in size 14 spikes.

He has racked up a formidable record in junior golf – winning and finishing in the top five regularly against older competition on the Florida Junior Tour.

Last year he also became the youngest player ever to compete on the European PGA Tour when he received an invitation to play in the Italian Open. Although he missed the cut, he received invaluable experience, playing in the same event as the likes of home-grown Italian stars, Edoardo Molinari and Manassero.

However, while big-time golf is his dream, he’s been able to apply himself to his studies with great success.

He graduated from his high school, Edison Academics in Florida, more than two years ahead of the normal schedule. “He’s an accelerated student, and he’s just gifted, “ said his father, Roberto Geminiani.

As part of his preparation for Royal Melbourne, Geminiani has been putting on the carpet at home at night. His lounge-room record is 601 consecutive eight-footers.

HARRY RUDOLPH III – now that’s a name that simply sounds as if it belongs on a list of US golf stars.

For a while, it looked as if Rudolph was headed that way, especially when he was occasionally beating his regular San Diego junior rival, Phil Mickelson. “We were the no.1 and 2 recruits in the country, “Rudolph recently recalled.

A few years later, fame and riches appeared his for the taking when he was part of the same NCAA-winning college team at the University of Arizona with future US Open champion, Jim Furyk.

His name was also alongside, David Duval, Justin Leonard and Mickelson as recipients of all-American college first team honours in 1992.

Yet somehow, while Mickelson, Duval, Leonard and Furyk went one way, Rudolph took a detour which led him out of the game, and back to flipping hamburgers in his own restaurant in La Jolla, near San Diego.

After playing unsuccessfully as a pro for several years in Asia, Australia, South America and the US, he suddenly quit the game in 1999.

It was a decade before he wanted to play again, and now, at 40, having regained his amateur status in 2009, he’s back playing top-flight golf, finishing runner-up in the California State Amateur and posting the best score at a local US Open qualifying event.

Rudolph returns to Australia this month, where he played professionally many years ago, this time with high hopes as a member of the US team competing for both the Australian Master of the Amateurs jacket and the World Cup trophy.

#Melbourne-based Korean JIN JEONG will have a two-fold purpose when he steps out at Royal Melbourne.

The reigning British Amateur champion is very keen to bring his winning form to the Australian Master of the Amateurs in his adopted home town as well as bring his game to a peak before heading off in April to play the US Masters at Augusta National.

Jeong set the amateur golf world alight in the middle of last year, winning the British

Amateur championship before finishing tied for 14th in the British Open at St Andrews, a phenomenal performance which brought him instant world-wide recognition.

Since then, Jeong has tested his game in several professional events and, although he has not performed as well as he would have liked, the experience has been invaluable.

Like many young Englishmen, 19-year-old TOM LEWIS came to Australia late last year to escape the British winter and already he’s made his mark here, finishing runner-up in the NSW Open after losing a play-off to veteran Australian professional Peter O’Malley.

Lewis hails from the same part of the world as Nick Faldo – he’s a member at Welwyn Garden City Golf Club in Hertfordshire and is clearly not fazed by playing out of his league.

Indeed, his stunning performance against the professionals in the NSW Open is not so surprising when you consider that, as a junior, he has performed very well in men’s events in his homeland.

He finished tied for third in the 2008 Brabazon Trophy and was a key performer in the winning England team at the 2010 Sotogrande Cup of Nations.

He represented his country at the 2010 Eisenhower Cup in Argentina – finishing tied 13th in the individual trophy and tied 8th in the teams event — and is now part of a formidable England team, preparing to take all before it at Royal Melbourne.

New Zealander BEN CAMPBELL has a lot in common with one of his country’s most famous sporting exports – the Melbourne Cup winner, Kiwi.

Only a couple of years ago he was barely heard of outside his own patch, a town called Masterton, 100 km north-east of Wellington. Now, gaining momentum with every stride, he’s overtaken his opposition in the blink of an eye.

Last year Campbell, at 19, became the first Kiwi to make the top 20 in the world amateur rankings since Danny Lee in 2008 and he is now rated as the best amateur in the Australasian region.

It’s easy to see why he’s vaulted to prominence so quickly.

His impressive recent record includes leading amateur in the 2009 Australian Open, a runner-up finish to Australian Matt Jager in the 2010 Australian Amateur championship and an impressive victory in the New Zealand pro tour event, the 2010 Tauranga Open, in which he shot a final round of 66.

He also finished fourth in the individual event at the 2010 Eisenhower Cup in Argentina and fourth in the 2010 Asian Amateur title in Japan.

Campbell has re-located to Melbourne to enhance his game under the tutelage of top coach Marty Joyce and, as a top 10 placegetter in the Australian Master of the Amateurs last year, he feels he’s ready to go all the way in front of his adopted home crowd.

On y trouve

How to Adjust the TaylorMade R15 Driver Settings | 60S Today

8 Things to Know About Adjusting Your Taylor Made R15 Driver Settings

.Review by by Derek Murray at ForeGolf

August 2015 ARTICLE UPDATE: We’ve conducted even more R&D on the R15, Read the latest Expert Guide to TaylorMade R15 Driver Adjustability

March 2015 Last month we wrote an independent review of the RSi Irons & R15 Driver but here’s some tips on how to adjust the TaylorMade R15 Driver. You will find some similarities of the new R15 Driver to the SLDR driver and Jet Speed drivers of last season.

There are two moveable parts to the R15 Driver 1) the hosel sleeve where the shaft goes 2) the two silver sliding weights on the sole

The sleeve on the R15 works a lot like the SLDR driver and Jet Speed drivers of last season where you can open the screw at the neck and rotate the head. The sliding weight looks a lot like the SLDR but now splits in half so you can better position the weight

8 Things to Know About Adjusting Your Taylor Made R15 Driver

There are 12 different positions/notches around the hosels circumference. Each notch creates a different angle/position of the head. There is a small dark arrow on the hosel to show where you need to set the hosel position to have that setting take effect.

. 2

The LOWER position creates a lower launching ball flight and it also opens the face – more fade to the right for a R/H golfer.

The HIGHER setting creates a higher launching ball flight and closes the angle of the face – more draw to the left for a R/H golfer.

. 4

The UPRT LIE (upright) setting allows for the current flatter lie of the R15 to be adjusted to a more upright angle for taller golfers, that visually need to see a more upright angled head.

This setting also helps golfers that need a neutral/square face angle but need to create more draw on their shots.

. 5

There are notches between the different settings which are the incremental changes towards that setting. So for instance if you want the head to be a little UPRIGHT and a little LOWER flighted – then position the hosel at the notch between the two settings.

. 6

As the hosel affects the head angle and in turn the ball flight, coordinating the right shaft flex, tip and specifically the correct torque of the shaft is very important. The way the head turns or releases through impact are controlled with the help of torque.

As a rough guide if you need less movement or a firmer feel use a low torque and if you need a more active feel go for a higher torque.

. 7

The sliding weights on the sole are not as effective for influencing the left to right (Fade) or right to left (Draw) spin axis on the ball. They are actually better suited to increase speed and lower spin on the ball.

From our testing the weights should be placed each side of where you hit the ball on the face. Capture where your strikes are on the face using face tape or spray and then split the weights and align them so they sit each side of the strike marks (even if they are off-centre).

Do this, and watch the ball speed increase and the stability of the clubhead improve.

. 8

This might sound simple but there are Right and Left sleeves. Make sure your sleeve is a R/H one if you are right handed and a L/H one if you are left handed. It’s printed on the sleeve with a simple R/H and L/H so you can check.

. What can you do to get the BEST from the R15 ?

The bottom line is that the driver is really well designed and is made to be tweaked to suit you. So get your wrench out and use this guide to test some of the different settings and work out what will suit you and your ball flight best. . Results: Most Wanted GPS Watch

The S6’s robust feature set includes custom pin placement, touch screen navigation, swing tempo readings, and smartphone integration via bluetooth.

Also worth noting is that unlike most GPS devices that give you distances in front/center/back, the S6 provides its to-the-green measurements as near/center/far, which, as the nomenclature suggests, gives you distances to the nearest and farthest point on the green from where you lie.

The Features You Want:

  • Custom pin placement
  • Touch screen
  • Full color display
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Graphical representation of fairway, hazards, and green in color
  • Swing Tempo and Strength data

To be improved:

  • A near complete offering, the S6 offers a glimpse of what could be. We’d love to see more swing data (swing speed, hand path, etc.) in future releases.

The WT5 does nearly everything you want at a price that rivals other full-feature devices.

The Features You Want:

  • Pin placement with green view
  • Hazard distances

To Be Improved:

  • Limited battery life may not pack enough juice to get you through 36 holes.

One of the easiest to use devices in our lineup, the Bushnell NEO XS combines pure simplicity with the features most want from their GPS watch

The Features You Want:

  • Displays distances to hazards as well as front/center/back of the green
  • Battery life for days (ok, for an easy two rounds, and maybe a third if you play speed golf)
  • Ease of use

Mizuno JPX EZ

Recognisable by their larger, confidence inspiring footprint, the brand new Mizuno JPX EZ fairway offers the ability to produce a higher and softer landing ball flight with optimal distance through a whole host of new technology.

The inventive Shockwave Soles offers increased ball speeds as it enables the entire clubhead to contract and expand, offering an additional energy source on impact. This is also relates to higher ball speeds when you hit it off the turf as the additional mass lowers the club head’s centre of gravity. The larger footprint also inspires confidence and the crown has been reinforced with a waffle affect that moves weight lower in the head for a softer ball flight.

The FlexLoft Fairway hosel offers golfers the unique ability to adjust the loft and lie angle independently with six different settings available in all five of the models. The new HyperFlight face is thinned out around the perimeter of the face to offer more forgiveness and distance on them off-center hits and the Compression Channel enables a springboard effect to amplify the performance of those miss-hits. The Front Track System has two 15g tungsten weights that can be easily moved to promote a draw or a fade. You can also separate the two weights which ultimately offers greater forgiveness with ball speed on miss-hits. Nike Vapor Fly Irons Review | 60S Today

50 Words or Less

The Nike Vapor Fly irons are designed to be higher launching, longer flying, and full of modern design for stability and better feel.

Nike earned some strong praise from us with Vapor Fly Pro irons, but now we’re taking a look at the Super Game Improvement (SGI) relative, the Nike Vapor Fly irons. As much as we would all like to be able to play like pros and play clubs like theirs, the simple truth is that isn’t always an option. Major manufacturers have been making GI and SGI clubs for years, but I would argue that these types of clubs have only been of higher quality in recent years. Nike, being known for innovation and access to high-caliber engineering resources, has produced one of the stronger SGI irons in the modern market.

Look, if you’re looking for an SGI iron that’s disguised as a small player’s blade, the Nike Vapor Fly irons are not it, but that’s ok. The Nike Vapor Fly irons are designed to give players extra stability but also confidence at address that the club is going to provide all the help it can. The topline is thick, there is a good amount of offset, and the soles are nice and thick.

The cavity back of the club has the signature volt yellow Nike swoosh, the Flybeams that help stabilize the body of the club are visible, and you see blue accenting and the same pattern on the rubber dampening material that’s found on the new driver heads. Nike did a good job making the Vapor Fly irons stay consistent with the branding of this season’s Fly line.

Sound & Feel

The long irons of the Nike Vapor Fly irons are hollow and the shorter irons have what Nike is calling a RZN pocket, which both have a very direct impact on the sound and feel of the club. The sound in the longer irons is very metallic (note: not like a fairway wood or hybrid) and is not a traditional iron sound, which I’m ok with in this SGI set. The shorter irons give you a little bit more slingshot snap at impact and lose a good amount of that metallic sound. The consistent sound characteristic is that they sound very explosive, like the ball is really popping off the face, even on mishits. The biggest negative in the sound department is when you make a terrible swing and take a bit too much ground. The club and the turf sound like they just got into a fight, but you’ll be surprised at the results of your short (more on that later).

The feel very much matches the characteristics of sound. The longer irons feel a bit hollow and very forgiving all over the face. When you really lay into one of the longer irons and hit a good shot, it really feels like a canon shooting off the face. The shorter irons have a bit more response in them and similar forgiveness, but the explosive feeling is a bit more familiar and closer to the standard “trampoline” or “spring” effect often described in SGI irons.

There were two things that jumped out at me in reviewing the Nike Vapor Fly irons beyond the usual positive attributes in SGI irons. First was that, yes, when I hit these well, I hit them a mile. Admittedly, modern SGI irons are prone to stronger lofts, but I’m talking up to about 30 yards more in the longer clubs. The high end for the shorter irons was about 20 yards. Now, there are a million things that could contribute to this, but the biggest takeaway is that a player looking to get some extra yards out of their SGI irons should be in good shape with the Nike Vapor Fly irons.

The second thing I noticed, and alluded to in the “Sound” section, was that the Vapor Flys had one of the best bailouts I’ve ever seen. I can’t tell you how many shots I just flat out “trenched” over the first twenty swings or so. I was hitting so fat which would result in a lot of loss in speed and hitting the ball high on the face. Almost miraculously, the ball would still fly straight and get out there a ways. Now, don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t hitting a fat shot 189 yards that was an intended 200, but I would find myself chucking the ball straight ahead 150-165 yards. Yes, this would be trouble if I had to carry water, but down the fairway to the green, I’m still in ok shape with decent progress. All I can say is that this was not an anomaly for me and proved to be a very common occurrence. As silly as it sounds, this was the most impressive part of this club for me. A lot of people make SGI clubs that go a mile and are forgiving, but this is the first time where I’ve ever seen one rescue a bad shot so well. When I think of the player looking for the benefits of an SGI iron, I think this is an absolute gift in these irons.

It’s funny, as I sat down to write this, I wasn’t sure what exactly it was going to look like “on paper.” The Nike Vapor Fly irons may seem like just another new flashy modern SGI option, but they really are a very good option to consider if you’re the right demographic for the club. The tools are there to hit long bombs when you make a good swing, but for the times you don’t, the Nike Vapor Fly irons have what it takes to minimize the damage and keep you in play.
