There’s been a raft of new premium golf balls this year – but which one should you be putting into play?

Unlike drivers and irons, golf balls aren’t usually reinvented every year – but 2017 has been special. It’s the first year we can remember every where major tour balls had been superseded by a newer, better model before the season even kicked off.

And in case you hadn’t noticed Nike pulled the plug on golf equipment, which has meant 18 tour players hunting down new balls for 2017, which makes it super interesting.

Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson are all playing new balls for 2017. So we thought the time was right to put each new model to the test to see how they compare. In the process we reckon we can give you some valuable buying advice on how to decide which premium tour ball might best suit your own game too.

When it comes to picking between premium tour balls club golfers traditionally struggle making the best choice for their overall game, as too much attention is focused on a single aspect at the expense of all other areas.

So let us show and explain to you what you put on the by making the wrong the decision. Believe us the choice between softer and higher spin, or firmer and less drag can make a dramatic difference to your score and the decision needn’t give you a headache either.

Golf Ball Test: How we did it

We asked the leading golf ball manufacturers to send us their newest 2017 premium tour models. You know, the ones pro’s play with week in week out and club golfers typically pull out for the monthly medal or club champs.

To ensure an accurate strike we got our TG Test pro to hit shots with a driver, 6 iron and PW, so we could see if each manufacturers claims stacked up. We tested indoors (within a controlled environment) on a Foresight GC2 launch monitor and collected data for each shot.

Major misses were rejected, but we monitored how shots launched into the air and what happened during their flight. After some serious number crunching we decided if each was doing as the manufacturer promised and fathomed how it might perform for you.

TaylorMade TP5X: £49.99

Tech:

Five layers make the TaylorMade TP5X the most complete tour ball ever say TaylorMade. A three-piece core has a progressive compression for maximum energy transfer and a two-piece cover for maximum feel and spin. A 90 compression means the TP5X feels firmer than the TP5, it also launches higher and spins a bit less with the irons.

Our verdict:

TaylorMade have pulled off a master stroke with the new TaylorMade TP5 and TP5X, as they’ve simplified the choice between them to a level club-golfers can understand. They say to make your selection based on the feel you desire. If you like softer go for TP5 if you prefer firmer go TP5X.

It’s no secret the majority of TaylorMade’s tour staff (including world #1 Dustin Johnson have gone TP5X, which can be explained by them wanting to be as far down the fairway as possible to give the shortest approaches into greens. As high swing speed players they generate lots of spin anyway so they don’t necessarily need a ball to generate spin for them.

For our test pro the TP5X performed brilliantly delivering his longest average driver carry distance, with very low spin. Six iron performance was similarly strong with only the TP5 going further and wedge spin was first class, even though supposedly the X is a firmer golf ball.

Bottom line:

The TP5’s have come out of the stalls fast on tour, chalking up two wins in the first few weeks they’ve been available. It’s a blend of low spin, long distance with every club in the bag. It’s also got the ability to stop on a six-pence and feels great off the putter which is a potent mix for club golfers who like a premium golf ball.

How it compares to the TaylorMade TP5

Tech:

The TaylorMade TP5 is still a five-layer ball and it’s 83 compression means the TP5 feels softer than the TP5X. Expect a lower launch, more iron spin but the same wedge and greenside spin as the TP5X.

Our verdict:

TaylorMade reckon there’s about 6 yards between the TP5 and TP5X when it comes to distance, but our test pro saw a 12 yard increase (with the driver) in favour of the X. The TP5 launched 1.5deg lower (with the driver), and span virtually exactly the same as the TP5X (10 rpm difference) with a wedge as TaylorMade had promised.

Srixon Z-Star XV: £45

Tech:

The Z-Star’s 4-layer construction has been specifically designed to perform at the highest swing speeds. A 105 compression is firmer than most tour balls but Srixon reckon it ensures maximum distance. Both Z Stars are designed to launch higher with less spin to maximise distance. A new spin skin coating increases friction between the clubface and ball and improved dimple aerodynamics deliver a longer more penetrating ball flight. Greenside spins a little lower compared to the softer Z-Star.

Our verdict:

Srixon specifically point out the Z-Star XV is aimed at high swing speeds, so unless you’re the owner of a 105 mph plus driver swing you’d be well advised to give the XV a wide berth. Our test pro recoded his lowest average driver backspin with the XV (2028 rpm) which has to say its geared up for big hitting so long as you’ve got the launch to get it out there.

Off the driver the XV wasn’t quite the longest but it was certainly amongst the pack. Six iron spin was lower than we saw with any other ball which would add up to increased accuracy and if we throw into the mix very solid wedge numbers you have a very solid golf ball for power players. Our test pro was surprised how good the XV felt, particularly off the wedge, feeling he preferred the feedback to his usual Pro V1X.

Bottom line:

Srixon sell more two-piece balls in the UK than any other brand. They’ve focused attention on that market for years to give themselves a foot hold to grow into the premium golf ball market. Based on the performance of the Z-Star XV in our tests it’s more than capable of mixing it up with the very best which explains why world #3 Hideki Matsuyama puts them into play on tour.

How it compares to the Srixon Z-Star

Tech:

The Z-Star’s 3-layer construction has a larger lower compression (88 compression) energetic core to deliver softer feel at mid – high swing speeds. Greenside spins a little higher than the firmer Z-Star XV.

Our verdict:

Don’t be lured into thinking the Z-Star XV is the only Srixon ball for power hitters. Last years longest hitter on tour, J.B Holmes played the Z Star and racked up a massive 315 yard average from the tee with it. Our test pro racked up a decent 267 yards of driver carry distance alongside a solid 9000 rpm of wedge spin, and very low iron spin which would increase accuracy.

Callaway Chrome Soft X: £32.99

Tech:

Some Callaway staff players didn’t put the Chrome Soft in play as they felt it span so little on full shots they couldn’t work shots in the shape they wanted. So Callaway developed the X specifically for them. It’s four-layer construction delivers a firmer feel (90 compression) and launches lower than the Chrome Soft, yet maintains all the same greenside control.

Our verdict:

Callaway’s big play with the Chrome Soft X is how it spins more than the standard Chrome Soft, and our data certainly supports their claims. We saw 190 rpm more spin with the driver, 715 rpm more with a six iron and 610 rpm more for full wedge shots. Which all sounds great so long as you don’t want to hit the ball straighter.

More backspin also means more side spin which for club golfers means less accuracy. Obviously for the tour pro’s who want to work shots in a certain shape more spin’s a great thing as it increases your ability to shape shots. Our test pro reckoned the Chrome Soft X is a great all-rounder which offers a fantastic blend of soft feel, great distance and excellent spin in the short game.

Bottom line:

Callaway’s trump card with the Chrome Soft isn’t how it’s played on tour or it’s super soft feel, but instead how they’re able to get it too market for just £32.99 a dozen. It’s significantly less than other premium balls, yet the across the board performance is fantastic and right up there alongside the very best.

How it compares to the Callaway Chrome Soft

Tech:

The ball that reinvented the ball and sparked the whole low compression debate. A four-layer construction and 75 compression give the Chrome Soft an exceptionally soft feel. A dual core increases ball speed whilst lowering spin in the longer clubs to increase distance and accuracy. Greenside spin is the same as the Chrome Soft X.

Our verdict:

There’s no doubt the Chrome Soft’s a superb ball for many club golfers. Put aside the price benefit, and look at the low driver and iron spin, plus higher launch and excellent soft feel, all without giving up huge amounts of short game spin, it’s a remarkable package. Our test pro’s high swing speed lost 9 yards of carry distance (with the driver) but picked up 7 yards with the 6 iron, which for us says excellent all round performance for a huge range of golfers.

Titleist Pro V1X: £52

Tech:

The Pro V1X has a four-piece construction and it’s been redesigned for 2017. A new dual core and improved dimple aerodynamics deliver longer distance, alongside a higher more consistent ball flight. Expect a firmer feel, higher flight and more iron and short game spin than the Pro V1.

Titleist Pro V1x

Our verdict:

The Pro V1 name is synonymous with being the best ball in golf. It’s been the most played golf ball on tour for years and is widely played by decent amateurs. 2017 however sees other ball brands focusing more attention on their line ups so the Pro V1’s up against stiffer competition than ever before.

Hands up though the new Pro V1X handled itself beautifully throughout our tests. A 276 yard average driver carry was just a single yard short of the longest (TaylorMade TP5X) and 3 yards further than the standard Pro V1. The X is our test pro’s usual ball and he reckoned it felt a bit softer than last years model, even though the numbers for both balls across all three clubs was very similar.

Bottom line:

You can’t take anything away from Titleist, they do make a top class golf ball. If you’re a Pro V1 devotee trust us your games in safe hands. Thanks to the 2017 changes it’s well worth re-evaluating whether you’re a Pro V1 or Pro V1X player again though.

How it compares to the Titleist Pro V1

Tech:

The Titleist Pro V1 has a three-piece construction and the 2017 version delivers longer distance, a more penetrating trajectory and what Titleist call a more consistent flight. Expect a very soft feel, lower flight and slightly less iron and short game spin than the new Pro V1X.

Our verdict:

In the past the choice between Pro V1 and Pro V1X has been reasonably straight forward. Our test results suggest the choice between the 2017 model’s is much tighter, and could well come down to the feel you prefer. Our test pro reckoned the new Pro V1 felt softer than his usual Pro V1X but with the numbers so tight it begs the question what Pro V1 brings to the party apart from softer feel.

Volvik S4: £49

Tech:

The ball Bubba Watson’s signed to play on tour. Volvik say a dual power core which includes bismuth metal (which expands 3.5% in volume when hit) provides greater explosiveness from the club face. A more solid inner core reduces spin with the driver and increases spin with the short irons. Volvik say it suits swing speeds from 95 – 120 mph and delivers a high launching trajectory.

Our verdict:

It came as a massive shock when world #13 Bubba Watson signed to play Volvik’s pink S4 balls in January 2017. Particularly when you consider he’d won two majors and over $35 million playing a Titleist Pro V1X. But with the big hitting American playing Volvik on tour we thought it was only fair to include it in our test.

Our test pro’s data explains perfectly why Bubba had no hesitation putting the S4 into play. Driver spin was low, iron and wedge spin was high which is perfect for how Bubba likes to shape shots. As good as the numbers are we weren’t huge fans on the fancy pearlescent finish, or the louder sound off the driver even if it was strangely powerful.

Bottom line:

Our test pro on average gave up 11 yards off the tee with the Volvik which might well be different at your swing speed. If you’re looking for an alternative premium ball the S4’s certainly won’t let you down, even if it’s not our personal favourite.

Bridgestone Tour B330: £40

Tech:

A tour ball specifically designed to offer maximum tour distance for swing speeds over 105mph (which Bridgestone say is only 25% of golfers). A 6% larger core gets progressively softer, which Bridgestone say reduces spin and increases ball speed. A new SlipRes cover generates more friction between ball and club and no seam in the cover increases consistency. A dual dimple design reduces drag and promotes a shallower descent for increased rollout.

Our verdict:

Bridgestone might have pulled out of the UK market last year, but their golf balls are still available here as Benross have the distribution rights. Bridgestone are the only brand that openly recommend balls based on club speed, so our test pro’s 110mph+ swing speed should have been right up the B330’s street.

The numbers didn’t quite stack up as impressively as some of the other balls though. Our test pro felt the distance promoting B330 felt a bit too firm and clicky especially when compared to some of the other “X type” balls on test. Looking at raw numbers the B330 gave up 10 yards of carry against the very longest, which has to come down to how both the B330 and B330S were the only balls on test to record +2500rpm back spin numbers with the driver.

Bottom line:

Take nothing away from Bridgestone, they do make a cracking golf ball. If you believe the rumours they were behind Nike’s and Tiger’s golf balls for years, hence why Tiger signed to play them again before his fourth back surgery. As far as performance goes for our test pro the B330 wasn’t the longest but we will admit to the wedge spin being consistently high, even though the ball felt quite firm.

How it compares to the Bridgestone Tour B330S

Tech:

It’s specifically designed to offer maximum tour spin for swing speeds over 105mph (which Bridgestone say is only 25% of golfers).

Our verdict:

The carry distance numbers between the B330 and B330S likethe Pro V1 and Pro V1X are very similar, even though ones more aimed at distance and the other added spin. Our test pro reckoned the S felt a good deal softer than the B330 and the higher spin numbers with the irons explain perfectly why Tiger choose this ball over the standard B330.

What we learnt…

Picking a golf ball need not give you sleepless nights.

A few years ago the choice between balls was really complicated. Unless you had a solid understanding of how you launched shots into the air with a driver, iron and wedge you couldn’t really make an informed choice to benefit your game. TaylorMade have changed all that with the TP5 and TP5X, bringing the choice down to softer or firmer, it’s as simple as that.

Once you’ve decided whether you want a ball to give you more distance or more spin there’s still a difference between the largest brands tour balls.

Comparing all the “X” type balls our test pro saw 10 yards of difference in carry distance and 13 yards in total distance. That’s over a club of difference when it comes to playing your approach shot into a green, and who doesn’t like standing over a 7 iron instead of a six?

Picking the right ball can make a difference on the golf course.

Obviously every golfer’s results will be different to our test pro’s, but we can’t hide how differently each ball performed in our test. A 12 yard deficit between the firmer TaylorMade TP5X and TP5 and 9 yard gap between the Callaway Chromesoft X and Chromesoft gives a great idea of how much you put on the line by purely choosing a ball for softer feel or more spin.

The difference between the new Pro V1 and Pro V1X was closer than we expected.

We reckon previous versions would have been more discernibly different. With just 3 yards carry distance difference with a driver, 1 yard with a 6 iron and 275 rpm of backspin change with a wedge suggests the two are closely matched, even if the Pro V1 does feel softer. There couldn’t be a better time to reassess if you’re a Pro V1 or Pro V1X player.

Callaway’s Chromesoft is a top ball, yet its significantly cheaper than most premium balls.

We’ve proven Callaway’s Chromesoft balls are absolutely top notch when it comes to performance, but as consumers we’re also likely to factor cost into our buying decision. The Chromesoft and Chromesoft X are £19.01 cheaper per dozen than the most expensive ball on test the Pro V1. Break that down into cost per ball and £2.75 for the Chromesoft looks super attractive compared to the Pro V1 at £4.33.

Lower spin means greater accuracy too.

We talk a lot about spin in golf, but very often the chatter’s around backspin rather than side spin. You have to realise lower spin also means less side spin, which increases accuracy. It’s really interesting how some Callaway players wouldn’t play the original Chromesoft as they felt it took away their ability to shape shots, which actually for club golfers could be a really good thing.

If you’ve never tried an “X” type golf ball there’s never been a better time to give one a whirl.

We, like a lot of golfers were under the impression “X” type balls were only for those with super-fast swing speeds. But it turns out that’s not necessarily the case with the latest breed. When you understand an X ball could give you double digit gains in carry distance without sacrificing short game spin (a number of modern “X” balls do this) it begs the question does extra feel really help me shoot lower scores?

It’s perfectly possible for a ball to be long off the driver, feel great and spin with a wedge too.

It was unthinkable a few years ago, as there was always a choice to be made or trade off to be had between balls. Now you have the ability to choose a ball based on the feel you desire, and know it will perform across the board for you. You can even get soft feeling super long golf balls, so there’s no excuses for giving up distance just to get feel.

Turbo

Turbo (also known as King Candy within Sugar Rush) is the main antagonist of Wreck-It Ralph. He was the famous main character in an 8-bit racing game called, Turbo Time. His legacy in Litwak’s Arcade had spawned the term “going Turbo” to describe the act of game-jumping, particularly if disastrous results ensue. Turbo Time was formerly the most popular game in the arcade, until another quickly usurped its spotlight in the form of RoadBlasters. Completely consumed with envy, Turbo decided to gain back attention by game-jumping into RoadBlasters with the intent on conquering it. This plan ended up getting both RoadBlasters and Turbo Time unplugged. He survived the incident and stayed around, apparently in hiding, until sometime during or after 1997; he then cleverly disguised himself as King Candy and entered Sugar Rush. Turbo wanted everyone to treat Vanellope so poorly so then he tried to delete her code, which resulted in her becoming a permanent glitch, so that he could become the rightful ruler of Sugar Rush.

As Turbo

Turbo was a short and stocky man with pale gray skin. He had bright yellow eyes with no irises, and tombstone-like yellow teeth. He also had what appears to be dark eye bags and laugh lines around his mouth, giving his face an overall skeletal look. His entire head was covered by a white racing helmet that was painted with a red signature “T” (for Turbo), and he wore a matching white and red jumpsuit. On the Turbo Time cabinet, he had a more cartoonish face, he had white eyes and teeth, and his helmet was painted with a red streak, in the center.

As King Candy

King Candy was a bald, white-skinned old man with gray hair tufts and eyebrows. He had beady, dark eyes and a cartoonishly large, bulbous nose. The king’s most notable feature would be his tiny, golden crown that is usually slanted atop his large head. He wore a purple tailcoat with a white shirt and vest, covered in glitter, lace collar, and cufflinks. There were also two golden buttons on the back of the tailcoat. A notable feature would also be his red bow-tie, which resembled a candy wrapper. He also wore poofy golden and caramel pants and purple slippers with red gumdrops at the tip that jingled whenever he moved frantically. During the races, the king would don a particular racing outfit that consisted of his prominent outfit, along with brown gloves, a large, golden and caramel helmet, and black racing goggles with red lenses. His kart, formerly Vanellope’s, seems to be made almost completely out of sugar. In most promotional material, King Candy is seen with his miniature candy cane, which was only featured briefly in the film during the Random Roster Race.

As a Cy-Bug

As a Cy-Bug, King Candy was about 30 feet (10 m) long and his face repeatedly glitched over from King Candy to Turbo, as if a render error, though King Candy was apparently the default face. He had the body structure of a silverfish, could curl into a ball for protection, and had a neck that could expand in length. His colors consisted of mostly purple, orange, and pink, and the tip of his claws had a darker tone of purple. He also gained six orange striped legs; four large ones, and two smaller ones located on his chest. His head also sported purple markings, which were also seen on his face along with a yellow marking under his crown. King Candy’s crown also changed, now having a spiky appearance and apparently becoming a permanent part of his body. With his transformation, he gained sugarcoated, hot pink, wings for flight that can fold in at will. Whenever his Cy-Bug programming occurred, King Candy’s eyes turned blue and pixelated, while the Turbo persona remained unchanged. King Candy also retained his cufflinks, lace collar, and red bow-tie with the transformation.

King Candy: King of All That’s Sweet“All hail King Candy—ruler of the race track, captain of confectionary, sovereign of sugar. Not surprisingly, the most powerful figure in the Sugar Rush game is also the best racer on the track. He may look noble enough, but don’t be fooled—this mysterious monarch rules his kingdom with a sugary fist and he is determined to keep his kingdom safe from glitches, rabble-rousers and outsiders. Don’t expect him to go easy on Ralph and Vanellope. The King is ably assisted by his strong-arming security donuts, Wynnchel and Duncan, and his diminutive henchman Sour Bill, a tiny little ball of unsweetness.”

“King Candy is not all laughter and lollipops. He’s also one of the best racers in Sugar Rush. What’s a more suitable seat for this ruler of the racetrack than his own candy kart- which doubles as the official throne. When this sovereign of sweetness isn’t ruling the land with a sugary fist, the King is modifying his kart to make sure it is the fastest, most stylish ride in all the land.”

Personality

As Turbo

Turbo during his time as the main character of Turbo Time.

Turbo appears to have been an arrogant and conceited character in his own game even before assuming the role of king of Sugar Rush. Whether or not he was sadistic or disturbed before adopting the persona of King Candy is unknown. The hijacking of RoadBlasters was certainly a symptom of jealousy and spite, but malicious intent may ultimately have arisen out of fear and a desperate sense of self-preservation, not an innate evil. The reason for his uninviting attitude and craving of destruction is because of his attention seeking self, which was granted by the arcade gamers, giving him the attention. He is described by Calhoun as a “selfish man” and “a mangy dog chasing a cautionary tale”.

As King Candy

As King Candy, he is shown at first to be a benevolent and generous king, giving lots of candy toward the characters of Sugar Rush. But this is none other than just an illusion of his true personality, which is tyrannical, manipulative, deceptive, and egocentric. This may be partly a result of the intense jealousy he held against RoadBlasters when it proved to be more popular than his original game. Turbo is also more determined to keep himself in power at any costs, even if it means manipulating others to an extent that will put them in harm’s place.

King Candy is incredibly flamboyant. Throughout most of the movie, he portrays himself as a bubbly, yet somewhat strict, ruler. As his true self (Turbo), he was said to have loved the spotlight, but the moment that was all taken away, he became demented, and he was determined to remain beloved, even if it meant ruining another game. While most of the movie portrays him as wacky and fun, his true colors are shown as time goes on. He is revealed to be an intelligent and villainous mastermind whose ambitions drive him to insanity. According to Sour Bill, he’ll do anything to stop Vanellope from racing. This was proven when Turbo tried to murder Vanellope on the racetrack during the Random Roster Race. It’s traits like these that makes Turbo a virus, what video game characters acknowledge as dangerous threats that can spread and control other games with ease. Like most Disney villains, Turbo is incredibly power-hungry; this is shown when he turns into a monstrous Cy-Bug and plans to take over every game in the arcade, because he has the ultimate power to assimilate.

Even though he was a strict ruler, he was apparently loved by the Sugar Rush subjects, who all showed definite respect for him, with the obvious exception of Vanellope. However, the praise was, in reality, artificial when Turbo had reformatted Sugar Rush years ago. He was particularly close to Sour Bill, his most trusted assistant. Bill was the only other character in the movie to know about the secret codes of Sugar Rush. Not only that, the king trusted Bill enough to actually inform him that Vanellope wasn’t really a glitch. Aside from his dark, yet funny, nature, Turbo also proves to be very manipulative. He was able to convince Ralph to destroy Vanellope’s kart, acting as if it was to protect her, though it was really to prevent his plans from being foiled.

He also showed signs of sadism, specifically when he laughed psychotically when Vanellope was about to meet her end on the race track, yelling “End of the line, glitch!”. This was also shown when he stated killing Ralph would be for fun then gratitude, and when he attempted to kill Ralph he took immense pleasure in doing so. He also forced Ralph to watch Vanellope as she was nearly killed by a swarm of Cy-Bugs, exclaiming, “Let’s watch her die together, shall we?!”

Story

Back when the arcade first opened in 1982, Turbo was the main character in a racing game known as TurboTime. It was by far the most popular game in the arcade, and Turbo loved all the attention and praise he received from his fans. However, when another game called RoadBlasters got plugged in and proved to be more popular due to superior graphics, Turbo was consumed by envy, so much so that he abandoned his own game and tried to invade the new one. However, he ended up crashing the new game, and both games were immediately put out of order and removed from the arcade. Many believed this was the end of Turbo, and he became a cautionary tale for other characters in the arcade who might wish to “go Turbo” and abandon their own role in pursuit of a more attractive one. In truth, though, Turbo had escaped before the two games were unplugged, and presumably undetected, he managed to usurp the lead role of Sugar Rush by 1997.

Turbo hacking into Sugar Rush‘s code disguised as King Candy

Turbo hacked into the game’s codes and unplugged Princess Vanellope von Schweetz from the mainframe, turning her into a glitch. He also re-formatted himself as King Candy and locked away the memories of all the other characters in order to have them turn against her, leaving him to take full control of the game. Unfortunately for Turbo, there were two flaws in his plan; the game’s codes would be restored if Vanellope was able to cross the finish line in a race, and though Vanellope apparently wasn’t meant to be in the game, her picture was still on the side of the game console.

As King Candy

In his disguise, Turbo is first seen as the ruler of Sugar Rush. Turbo partakes in the daily races with the status as Sugar Rush’s best racer and acts in a very cruel manner (especially to Vanellope and later on, Ralph). In order to keep Vanellope from crossing the finish line in Sugar Rush races, Turbo creates a set of rules to which everyone in the land of Sugar Rush takes heed.

The king, seeing Ralph as a threat to his game, immediately takes action by forcing his guards to get rid of him, believing that Ralph is trying to take over Sugar Rush (though Ralph states that he’s only after his Hero’s Duty’s Medal that Vanellope stole from him). Regardless of his attempts, Ralph manages to escape and he helps Vanellope build a kart to enter a race with in order to retrieve his Hero’s Duty medal.

The King notices what Ralph is trying to do and goes so far as to use cheat codes to get Ralph his medal back so he’ll no longer assist Vanellope in making a kart. Ralph tries to figure out why King Candy and the other racers have a grudge against Vanellope, to which King Candy explains that Vanellope could potentially make Sugar Rush become unplugged because of her glitching. King Candy then tricks Ralph into breaking Vanellope’s kart. Later, Ralph notices a picture of Vanellope on Sugar Rush’s game cabinet and realizes that Vanellope was actually meant to be in the game. Ralph forces Sour Bill to tell him why Vanellope is present on the game cabinet and it is revealed that King Candy made Vanellope a glitch on purpose. Sour Bill also confesses that he had Felix imprisoned in the Fungeon to stop him from tracking down Ralph

King Candy is revealed as Turbo

since Fix-It Felix, Jr. is on the verge of being unplugged due to Ralph’s absence. Determined to set things right, Ralph persuades Felix to fix Vanellope’s kart and frees Felix and Vanellope from the Fungeon. The trio proceeds to the Random Roster Race, which has begun in earnest without Vanellope.

At one point during the Random Roster Race, Vanellope catches up to King Candy, who viciously tries to ram Vanellope off the track. When Vanellope tries to escape, Candy instantly becomes enraged; he grabs his kart’s antenna and brutally attacks Vanellope with it. As the angered king keeps attacking the glitch, Vanellope attempts to disarm King Candy. As the two struggle, King Candy’s glitching settles, and reveals his true form: Turbo, the infamous game-jumping psychopath from Turbo Time, much to the shock of the onlooking Ralph and Felix. Turbo then tries to ram Vanellope and her kart into a wall, but Vanellope consciously wills herself to glitch in order to escape. Turbo tries to chase her, but a Cy-Bug blocks his path and devours him. When the Cy-Bugs start devouring Sugar Rush, after learning from Sergeant Calhoun that only a beacon of light can kill the Cy-Bugs, Ralph decides to create a beacon by punching Mentos into a pool of Diet Cola, which would kill him and stop the Cy-Bugs.

Unfortunately, before Ralph can release the final batch of Mentos into the volcano, Turbo (who have merged with the same Cy-Bug that ate him) knocks him away. He then declares to Ralph that thanks to him, he is now the most powerful arcade virus and can take control of every game in existence.

After a lengthy fight, Turbo flies up into the air, dragging Ralph to force him to see Vanellope getting killed by a swarm of Cy-Bugs. Fortunately, Vanellope uses her glitching to escape the Cy-Bugs, and Ralph breaks free from Turbo’s grasp, plummeting down into the Mentos atop the volcano to ensure that the beacon is set off properly. The powerful punch successfully dislodges all the Mentos and sends them into the Diet Cola Hot Spring. Vanellope rescues Ralph from the resulting explosion in the nick of time. As the beacon lights, all the Cy-Bugs are attracted to it and perish in the process. Turbo, of course, tries to resist at first by alternating between his mesmerized Candy persona and his panicking Turbo one, but the Cy-Bug programming overwhelms him and he flies to the beacon and his death. Because he is from a different game, he is unable to regenerate (which Sonic the Hedgehog explained at the start of the film).

  • Turbo’s King Candy disguise design is said to have been inspired by the Mad Hatter, who in turn was inspired by the actor Ed Wynn. He may have also been designed after Willy Wonka (1971). At Disney’s request, Turbo’s/King Candy’s voice actor Alan Tudyk deliberately modeled King Candy’s voice after Wynn’s.
  • In the playable, browser-based game adaptation of Sugar Rush, one can unlock King Candy himself as a playable racer simply by typing in the code “KING CANDY”. In the Japanese version, this code is “7eleven”.
  • In early stages of production, King Candy owned a Uni-candy-corn named Skittles.
  • As King Candy, his fans were anthropomorphic popcorn.
  • Turbo looks very different from his promotional art render of himself on the side of his game cabinet, with his render showing a much happier and cartoonier appearance. In his actual game, Turbo (and the twins) look much more fatigued and gaunt.
  • Turbo was animated by Zach Parrish.
  • He and Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit: are similar in many ways:
    • Both tried to take over another dimension; for Judge Doom, it would be the Toon World while for Turbo, it would be the video game arcade.
    • Their true form is revealed at the climax of their respective films; Judge Doom’s true form was revealed after getting flattened by a steam roller while Turbo’s true form was revealed from Vanellope’s glitching.
  • Turbo’s personality is similar to that of Mr. Waternoose, the antagonist from Monsters, Inc., who started off as a friendly character but had his true nature revealed by the end.
  • He is also similar to Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear from Toy Story 3, getting angry about rejection/replacement and wanting revenge by taking over a particular place. He also is similar because he wasn’t apparently evil until this event.
  • The password he entered on the NES controller to get into the code room of Sugar Rush is the infamous Konami Code.
  • The kart that he is normally seen with used to be in Vanellope’s possession, as Vanellope is seen driving it on the side of the game console.
  • Despite the appearance of the kart he uses, no official name has been released and is the only kart in the game to have no name, but a widely-used fan-made name is the Royal Kart or Royal Racer. However, it is called the Royal Racer in Disney Infinity.
  • Turbo is apparently the only racer known to have escaped Turbo Time before it was unplugged.
  • Turbo may have done some graffiti on the Sugar Rush walls at Game Central Station. To the right, there is a stamp that says “Turbo” with a picture of Turbo’s face.
  • When King Candy is accessing his code in the Sugar Rush code room, there are two code blocks that resemble Turbo’s 8-bit face.
  • Turbo’s and King Candy’s catchphrases both have 4 syllables, and are both trochaic.
  • Despite the fact Turbo is the main antagonist of the movie, he did not originally have any promotional art or merchandise in his original form. This is perhaps due to the fact that Disney did not want anyone to know that Turbo was the main antagonist of the film until the audience watched the movie and found out for themselves. However, in late 2013, Funko released Turbo as a Pop Vinyl figure.
  • He shares similarities to Napoleon in George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm. Both characters believe that what they want is what everyone else wants. They both have a sidekick (Sour Bill with Turbo and Squealer with Napoleon). Also, they spread propaganda to their followers and they both had other henchmen (Sugar Rush racers with Turbo and the guard dogs with Napoleon).
  • Throughout the movie, there are signs that King Candy was Turbo. Here are the following examples:
    • His made-up name was “King Candy”, a simple and fairly obvious name for a character in a candy-themed setting, while all the other characters have clever plays on various kinds of candy for names.
    • He doesn’t look like the other racers from Sugar Rush. While he has a rather cartoonish look, the racers have the appearance of chibi (Japanese small characters).
    • He was the only one from Sugar Rush that knew Ralph’s name because when he was known as Turbo, his game was next to Ralph’s game. Possibly knowing him before he became King Candy.
    • When Ralph was going to smash him, he was running because he knew that he was outside of his game and he wouldn’t regenerate if he died.
    • During the scene where the racers insert their coins to be in the race, the announcer sounds different saying King Candy, as if Turbo tried voicing it himself, while the other racers he announced sounds the same for each of them. Vanellope’s name also is in more of an excited voice; since she was originally the princess, she’d likely be the best racer in the game.

      King Candy’s code block is a different color and is also bigger (almost double size) than the other racers’ blocks, and as opposed to 10 sides of the others, his only has 3 sides (2 flat and 1 curved). This is because he had to make it himself, and half is about Turbo’s true identity and the second half is about the King Candy disguise, sweet voice, and more that gives him his Candy persona.

    • When King Candy is accessing his code in the Sugar Rush code room, there are some faces of Turbo that can be seen. This was foreshadowing that King Candy was Turbo.
    • When Ralph threatens King Candy about his medal, King Candy asks him if he’s going turbo despite Sugar Rush being younger than both Road Blasters and Turbo Time.
  • When “Going Turbo” is first mentioned by M. Bison, some viewers thought that he was making a Street Fighter reference, as that series has frequently released “Turbo” editions of existing games that are generally poorly received by the fanbase.
  • Turbo is, to some extent, similar to Vathek from Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.
    • ​Both tried to destroy the former ruler to become king.
    • Both have a lisp.
    • Both end up being defeated in some way.
    • Both engage the main characters in a boss battle.
    • Both alter their surroundings to suit their needs (Turbo changed the racer’s codes to make them think he was king, Vathek placed guards everywhere and fire breathing statues of himself).

  • The term “going Turbo” might be a possible reference to the term “going postal”.
  • During the announcement of the first Disney Infinity game, one concept art showed a King Candy character in T-posed mode. For unknown reasons, King Candy was removed from the game at some point prior to release. However, in Disney Infinity 3.0, the player can unlock the King Candy Cy-Bug toy from Toy Box Speedway, and purchase his/Vanellope’s Royal Racer as a rideable vehicle in the Toy Box.

K-Drive Race

K-Drive Races are free roam missions for the Ventkids that are run by Boon in the Orb Vallis and Grandmother in the Cambion Drift. The goal of each race is to pass through as many gates as possible while mounting a K-Drive and then reach the final gate within a time limit. Completing the race will earn the player Standing for the Ventkids.

There are 22 races scattered across the Orb Vallis and 8 across the Cambion Drift, however, only 5 are active in each open world at a time. The active races refresh daily, at the same time as Daily Tribute and Standing limits. Currently available races can be checked by mounting a K-Drive and then opening the map.

Starting a race costs 5 StandingReputationBlackx64.png 5 for each gate in the race and will reward 200 StandingReputationBlackx64.png 200 for each gate if completed successfully. For example, the race “The Hard Way” behind Fortuna consists of 10 gates so entering will cost 50 StandingReputationBlackx64.png 50 and will reward 2,000 StandingReputationBlackx64.png 2,000 when finished.

Every gate grants 500 K-Drive Affinity and 5 seconds to the race time limit when passed, and the final gate grant 2,500 K-Drive Affinity.

Races can be repeated indefinitely for standing provided that the player is below the daily standing cap for the Ventkids.

Scoring[]

Upon completing a race, a score is given. The top 10 scores are shown on a leaderboard next to Boon at the beginning of each race. Scores reset each day as the available races rotate. If a race stays available across 2 subsequent days, the leaderboard will not reset for the second day.

Scores are a combination of passing through gates and speed. Each gate passed through contributes 200 points. Each second remaining on the timer contributes 10 points. For example, completing the race “Skeggin’ Out” with 13 gates and 61 seconds left on the timer would earn a score of (13 * 200) + (61 * 10) = 3210 points.

Notes[]

  • Completing all 22 races in the Orb Vallis will grant you the Race Ace achievement.
  • It is possible to complete constant races by ignoring the other gates and bee-lining for the final gate. However, players will obtain lesser K-Drive Affinity and Ventkids Standing that way.
  • When passing through the final gate of a race at very high speed, even though the race will finish, sometimes the gate and the 5 seconds it grants will not be counted toward the score.
  • All Cambion Drift K-Drive Races that drop K-Drive parts will only do so once.

Camp Golf

Camp Golf is an New California Republic military base, located on the north shore of Lake Las Vegas, east of the Grub n’ Gulp rest stop. It serves as the headquarters for the NCR Rangers in the Mojave Wasteland in 2281.

Background

Established in and around the House Resort and accompanying golf course belonging to Robert House before the War, Camp Golf was the frontlines of the NCR’s fight against Caesar’s Legion during the First Battle of Hoover Dam in 2277. However, as its strategic value waned and it found itself miles behind the frontline, it subsequently became a dump of sorts for the NCR Army. Underperforming soldiers are sent to Camp Golf to be shaped up by its drill instructors.

The matter is different for NCR Rangers. The actual resort building has been adopted as their regional headquarters, doubling as communication and quartermaster hub. This causes some tension between rangers and troopers, the latter having to camp in military tents on the dilapidated golf course, while the former enjoy all the luxuries a pre-War resort provides.

The NCR maintains a heavy presence here, guarding a large water pipe that extends to the north, providing water to the NCR sharecropper farms and ensuring a constant supply of food for the NCR.

Layout

The camp consists of several tents on the golf course west of the resort building, near which the command tent, infirmary, mess hall, and shooting range are located. The perimeter is secured by several watchtowers manned by sentries at all times. South of the resort, the main pipeline providing water to New Vegas exits into Lake Mead.

Le Gear Fourth est le nom d’une technique de combat de Monkey D. Luffy qui apparaît pour la première fois dans le combat de ce dernier contre Doflamingo [2]. Cette technique a été développée par Luffy durant son entraînement sur Rusukaina [3]. Il existe à ce jour 3 formes similaires mais tout de même différentes du Gear Fourth, le Boundman, le Tankman et enfin le Snakeman.

Le Gear 4 dans le manga

Afin d’activer le Gear Fourth, Luffy équipe un des ses bras (souvent le bras gauche) de Haki de l’Armement, mord son avant-bras puis, de façon similaire au Gear Third, souffle une quantité incroyable d’air dans son corps, cette fois non pas pour gonfler ses os mais bien gonfler toute sa structure musculaire. Cette technique rends le corps de Luffy extrêmement tendu, empêchant celui-ci de se tenir sur le sol, en le faisant rebondir. Il est de ce fait, obligé de retirer ses sandales qu’il garde d’habitude en permanence sur lui. Le Gear Fourth lui donne une peau noire dans le manga,[4] et rouge dans l’anime.[1]

Le Boundman et le Snakeman ont tous deux été mis au point pour venir à bout des créatures féroces se trouvant sur Rusukaina durant son entraînement.[3] On ne sait cependant pas si le Tankman avait été prévu à l’avance par Luffy, en raison de la nature très imprévisible des circonstances nécessaires pour activer celui-ci.

De même que le Gear Second, le Gear Fourth permet à Luffy d’utiliser des techniques de sa propre invention en imitant certaines des capacités du Rokushiki. Par exemple, sa technique de “vol” ressemble fortement au Pas de Lune.

Cette technique permet à Luffy de mieux exploiter l’élasticité de son corps grâce à la combinaison de son fruit et de son haki de l’armement: il peut non seulement rebondir en l’air, mais aussi attaquer. Son corps, sous cette forme, est assez fort pour encaisser des attaques frontales.[2] Cependant, il semble y avoir une limite à la durée d’utilisation du Gear Fourth, comme l’ont fait remarqué Luffy, puis Doflamingo[5]

Cette théorie est validée au cours du chapitre suivant où Luffy, ne pouvant contrôler plus longtemps le Gear Fourth, est frappé de plein fouet par les effets secondaires de cette technique.[6] Ces effets provoquent une expulsion non-volontaire de l’air contenu dans son corps, et une diminution de son Haki de l’Armement, voire une disparition de ce dernier, et donc par conséquent de sa force.

Aux premières utilisations du Gear Fourth, maintenir cette forme demandais une énergie considérable, elle faisait également consommer beaucoup de calories à Luffy, le faisant maigrir considérablement après sa transformation [7]. Il doit attendre 10 minutes pour que son Haki soit rechargé et donc pour pouvoir réactiver le Gear Fourth. Il peut aussi combiner le Gear Third à ce Gear, comme il l’a fait avec sa technique du “King Kong Gun”[8].

Aux premières utilisations du Gear Fourth, le corps de Luffy est usé, éprouvé et son endurance s’en trouve affectée; après avoir regagné son Haki et réutilisé ce dernier, il avait tout juste assez de force pour se battre et son utilisation brève pour une seconde fois lui valut un état d’inconscience d’une durée de trois jours.

Cependant son endurance semble beaucoup s’améliorer lors du combat qui l’oppose à Charlotte Katakuri, et semble s’améliorer énormément lors du chapitre 975 ou Luffy utilise le Gear Fourth directement contre de simples soldats, signe que son entrainement à Udon a sûrement grandement amélioré son endurance. Luffy met d’ailleurs désormais beaucoup moins de temps à se changer en Gear Fourth.

Gear Fourth Boundman[]

Dans cette forme, les proportions de son corps sont chamboulées, lui offrant une taille beaucoup plus imposante. Ses bras, son torse et ses jambes sont également recouvertes de Haki. Comme toutes les formes de Gear Fourth, de la fumée sors du corps de Luffy.

Lorsque Luffy est dans cette forme, sa force et sa sont accrues à tel point qu’il est capable de surpasser un membre des Sept Grands Corsaires, Doflamingo, alors qu’auparavant, l’utilisation du Gear Second et du Gear Third n’eurent que peu d’effets sur ce dernier.

Luffy montre aussi un côté beaucoup plus polyvalent du Gomu Gomu no Mi. En effet, nous pouvons citer par exemple l’utilisation de son élasticité pour atteindre une forme de pseudo-vol, ou encore pouvoir changer la direction de ses attaques pour frapper un adversaire se déplaçant rapidement, ainsi qu’être capable de renforcer ses coups d’une manière similaire au Bane Bane no Mi, en comprimant ses bras et ses jambes pour en faire des ressorts.

La puissance de ses attaques ainsi que sa durabilité sont démultipliés sous cette forme. Malgré le fait que son corps est revêti de haki de l’armement, les propriétés élastiques de son corps demeurent, par conséquent, les coups de Doflamingo ne font que rebondir sur son corps [2].

Bien que sa résistance aux attaques tranchantes a été accrue par le biais de cette forme, si un adversaire utilise une lame imprégnée d’un Haki de l’Armement supérieur à celui de Luffy, cette attaque passera bien évidemment à travers son haki comme nous le prouve son combat contre Charlotte Cracker [9].

Gear Fourth Tankman[]

Luffy ayant ingurgité énormément de biscuits crées par Charlotte Cracker grâce à son fruit du biscuit lors de son combat contre lui, il deviendra extrêmement gros (son corps étant élastique, la seule limite de son estomac est la limite de son élasticité) et recouvrira presque tout son ventre jusqu’au nombril de haki de l’armement et ses bras le faisant devenir un bouclier extrêmement résistant, cette forme rebondi sur le sol tout comme le Boundman. Comme toutes les formes de Gear Fourth, de la fumée sors du corps de Luffy.

Cette forme est apparue dans des circonstances particulières, lors du combat de Luffy contre Charlotte Cracker [10]. Étant en obésité temporaire après avoir mangé tous les biscuits crées par Cracker, il soufflera dans son bras empli de haki pour obtenir cette forme.

Du fait que l’obésité de Luffy n’était que temporaire et un cas exeptionnel en vue de la situation, nous ne sommes pas en mesure de savoir si nous reverrons un jour cette forme.

Gear Fourth Snakeman[]

Dernière forme du Gear Fourth en date, cette technique est apparue pour la première fois face à Charlotte Katakuri dans le monde miroir de Brûlée afin de contrer son haki de l’observation surpuissant.

Bien que plus grand que Luffy sans Gear Fourth, le Snakeman est bien plus discret qu’un Boundman ou un Tankman. Dans cette forme, Luffy a les cheveux qui montent et se déplacent comme des serpents, ses bras font également des mouvements de serpent dans l’animé. Son visage est bien plus expressif, ressemblant a un visage énervé. Ses bras sont couverts de haki de l’armement jusqu’à environ la moitié de son biceps et ses jambes sont également couvertes de haki, on ignore cependant jusqu’où elles le sont car elles sont cachées par son short. Ses yeux sont également entourés de haki. Comme toutes les formes de Gear Fourth, de la fumée sort du corps de Luffy.

Cette technique mise bien plus sur la vitesse d’exécution que sur la puissance ou la résistance (bien que cette forme est tout de même plus puissante et résistante que Luffy sans celle-ci). Dans cette forme, les attaques de Luffy font référence à différentes races de serpent (Cobra, couleuvre, mamba noire).

  • Kinniku Fuusen/Ballon Muscle (筋肉風船 Kin’niku Fūsen) : En recouvrant son bras du Busoshoku no Haki et en mordant dans son avant-bras, Luffy est capable d’insuffler une grande quantité d’air dans son corps et de gonfler par conséquent sa structure musculaire avec l’air soufflé dans son bras.[2] Dans cette forme, sa durabilité est améliorée à un point où même un coup de pied de Doflamingo, un Shichibukai, a rebondi, ne causant aucun dommage, en raison du fait que le corps de Luffy conserve les propriétés de son fruit du démon, même recouvert de Haki. Il utilise également la même technique face à Cracker.[11]
  • Gomu Gomu no Kong Gun (ゴムゴムの猿王銃(コングガン) Gomu Gomu no Kongu Gan, qui signifie littéralement “Coup du Gorille“) : En comprimant son poing de nouveau dans son avant-bras élargi, Luffy est capable de déclencher un coup dévastateur, brisant la défense de Doflamingo, et l’envoyant valdinguer[12].
  • Gomu Gomu no Rhino Schneider (ゴムゴムの犀榴弾砲(リノシュナイダー) Gomu Gomu no Rino Shunaidā) : Luffy, après la compression des deux jambes dans son corps, offre une double coup avec celles-ci. Ce fut d’abord utilisé comme une attaque surprise contre Doflamingo. Il a assez de puissance pour envoyer s’écraser l’adversaire à travers des dizaines de bâtiments, une distance non-négligeable[13]. De plus, cette technique est similaire au “Gomu Gomu no Yari”.
  • Gomu Gomu no Culverin/Couleuvrine (ゴムゴムの大蛇砲(カルヴァリン) Gomu Gomu no Karuvarin, qui signifie littéralement “Grand Serpent Canon“) : Livré comme un “Gomu Gomu no Pistol”, et même esquivé, Luffy peut rediriger son coup de poing un nombre indéterminé de fois pour atteindre avec une force et une précision terribles son adversaire.[14]
  • Gomu Gomu no Double Culverin (ゴムゴムのダブル大蛇砲(カルヴァリン) Gomu Gomu no Daburu Karuvarin, même signification que le “Gomu Gomu no Culverin Cannon” mais le “Double” est rajouté) : Quand il l’utilise pour la première fois contre Doflamingo, il ne redirige pas ses bras, il lance l’attaque comme un double “Jet Pistol” si l’on veut. En effet il “rétracte” ses bras et les envoie comme un “Jet Pistol”. Mais son attaque est contrée par le “OffWhite” de Doflamingo.[15]
  • Technique sans nom : Une technique apparaît juste avant le Leo Bazooka, mais elle n’a pas de nom. Luffy contracte et rentre sa tête dans son corps, puis la propulse en avant (ce qui ressemble un peu à un coup de boule). Cette technique est utilisée pour briser la défense de Doflamigo afin d’avoir le champ libre pour utiliser son “Gomu Gomu no Leo Bazooka”.[16]
  • Gomu Gomu no Leo Bazooka (ゴムゴムの獅子(レオ)・バズーカ Gomu Gomu no Reo Bazūka) : Après avoir rétracté ses deux poings dans ses bras, Luffy les envoie violemment sur son adversaire. Ce fut d’abord utilisé contre Doflamingo.[17]
  • Gomu Gomu no King Kong Gun (ゴムゴムの大猿王銃(キングコングガン) Gomu Gomu no Kingu Kongu Gan, qui signifie littéralement “Coup du Roi Gorille“) : Après avoir activé son Gear Fourth, Luffy fusionne aussi ce Gear avec le Gear Third; il insuffle de l’air pour gonfler ses bras déjà imbibés de Haki et en Gear Fourth. Ce mariage de Gears permet d’augmenter considérablement la puissance de Luffy. Il est utilisé contre Doflamingo pour mettre ce dernier K.O [18]
  • Gomu Gomu no Kong Organ (ゴムゴムの猿王群鴉砲(コングオルガン) Gomu Gomu no Kongu Orugan) : Une version plus rapide du Kong Gun où Luffy contracte ses deux bras avant d’envoyer une multitude de coups, d’une manière similaire au Gomu Gomu no Gatling.
  • Gomu Gomu no Kong Rifle (ゴムゴムの猿王回転弾 Gomu Gomu no Kongu Raifuru) : Luffy enroule son poing tout en le rentrant dans son bras, donnant un effet à sa frappe lorsqu’il le déroule et cogne son adversaire. Technique utilisée pour la première fois face à Kaido sur le toit du dôme d’Onigashima.[19]
  • Gomu Gomu no Kong Gatling (ゴムゴムの猿銃乱打 Gomu Gomu no Kongu Gatoringu) : Après avoir augmenté le volume de ses bras et les avoir enduit de Haki de l’Armement, Luffy envoie une rafale de coups de poings sur son adversaires à une vitesse donnant l’impression qu’il possède plusieurs bras. Technique utilisée pour la première fois contre Kaido sur le toit du dôme d’Onigashima.[19]

  • Gomu Gomu no King King King Kong Gun (ゴムゴムの大大大猿王銃 Gomu Gomu no Kingu Kingu Kingu Kongu Gan)Technique très similaire au King Kong Gun sauf que son bras gonfle encore plus, ce qui lui permet d’atteindre une puissance égale voire supérieur au poing de géant de Bullet qui est presque aussi grand qu’une Île.
  • Gomu Gomu no King Kong Gatling (ゴムゴムの大猿銃乱打 Gomu Gomu no Kingu Kongu Gatoringu) Une version plus puissante de Gomu Gomu no Kong Organ et une version rapide de King Kong Gun. Après avoir serré les deux poings et insufflé une grande quantité d’air dans ses bras, Luffy bouge rapidement ses bras horizontalement. Les images rémanentes donnent l’impression que deux paires de bras supplémentaires sont en train de se matérialiser, avant de libérer une série de coups durs et continus. Cela a d’abord été utilisé pour vaincre Douglas Bullet.

  • Tank Man : Full Version (満腹(まんぷく)バージョン Manpuku Bājon) : Après avoir mangé une énorme quantité d’armures-biscuits, l’effet étant le même que s’il utilisait son Gomu Gomu no Baloon, Luffy imprègne son énorme ventre de Haki. Cette technique fut utilisée pour battre Cracker [10].
  • Gomu Gomu no Cannonball (ゴムゴムのキャノンボール Gomu Gomu no Kyanonbōru) : Dans sa forme “Tank Man”, Luffy, après que son adversaire ait foncé dans le ventre de Luffy (et se retrouvant coincé par la même, Luffy ayant compressé son ventre), lance son adversaire à pleine puissance de telle manière que l’adversaire est projeté et renvoyé à une vitesse incroyable. Cette attaque est similaire au Gomu Gomu no Orei Fire mais en beaucoup plus puissant.[10]

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Culverin (ゴムゴムのJET(ジェット)大蛇砲(カルヴァリン) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Karuvarin) : Version plus rapide du Gomu Gomu no Culverin en Boundman. Luffy comprime son poing puis le relâche. Il utilise Python pour que la trajectoire de son poing suive les mouvements de son adversaire. Plus son bras s’étire, plus la vitesse augmente. La force de cette technique est suffisante pour envoyer Katakuri se fracasser dans un pilier [20].
  • Gomu Gomu no Black Mamba (ゴムゴムの黒い蛇群(ブラック・マンバ) Gomu Gomu no Burakku Manba) : Cette technique est similaire au Gomu Gomu no Kong Organ en Boundman mais couplé avec le Culverin, Luffy cambre ses deux bras en arrière puis les compriment pour ensuite les relâcher. Etant donné qu’il y ait plusieurs trajectoires, le Black Mamba est plus compliqué à éviter. Utilisé pour la première fois contre Katakuri bien que celui-ci réussi à les esquiver [20].
  • Gomu Gomu no King Cobra (ゴムゴムの王蛇(キング・コブラ) Gomu Gomu no Kingu Kobura) : Version plus grande du Gomu Gomu no Jet Culverin. Cette attaque est relâchée après que Luffy ait comprimé son poing, faisant le tour de Luffy afin d’augmenter sa vitesse et sa puissance. Utilisé pour la première fois contre Katakuri afin de lui donner le coup de grâce.

Futilités[]

  • L’apparition de cette technique est étonnamment similaire à une forme précédente que Luffy avait utilisée, Nightmare Luffy, en raison de sa taille musculaire accrue et de son expression sinistre au niveau du visage.[21]
  • C’est la deuxième fois depuis l’Arc Thriller Bark que Luffy allie deux Gear de cette manière.
  • Luffy a développé cette technique lorsque Rayleigh était encore sur Rusukaina, on peut donc en déduire que Luffy maîtrise le Gear Fourth depuis au minimum 6 mois.
  • Dans l’anime, lorsque Luffy se transforme pour la première fois, la silhouette de son Fruit, le Gomu Gomu no Mi, est vue en fond lorsque son torse se couvre de Haki.[22]
  • Les techniques Gomu Gomu no Kong Gun et Gomu Gomu no King Kong Gun sont des références au fameux gorille de fiction, King Kong.
  • Lorsque Luffy est en forme Snakeman il utilise le poing du léopard, frappant avec la deuxième phalange de ses doigts.

Many people have a dream about learning the French language. It’s a language of art and history. It has an air of romance and it can sound fantastic. For most people, however, learning French remains a dream. People tell themselves that language studies require tons of dedication, classes, and burying your nose in textbooks for hours each day. But it doesn’t have to be that complicated. In this article, I’ll tell you how to learn French while driving your car!

It can be a struggle to find the time to study French with a busy schedule. But think about how much time you spend doing things where your mind wanders. You do the dishes and you think of traveling, you walk the dog and you recall a conversation you had with your boss earlier. Or you drive your car to work, and you find yourself thinking about something completely random for the whole 25 minutes.

All of these moments, your brain is actually free to be put to work! So why not spend the time studying French, so finally you can get that dream realized!

You can learn French while driving your car by listening to audio-courses, repeating out-loud, having imaginary conversations with yourself, or revising content you’ve previously studied. The best way to make use of your commute for French-learning is to consolidate content you’ve already studied elsewhere.

Most language learning approaches deal with all of four categories: Listening, reading, speaking and writing. Two are about understanding language and the other two about producing it.

While you drive your car, I strongly recommend that you focus on listening and speaking and not the other two! I do, however, recommend that you try reading just a little bit in French each days. Even if it’s only five minutes. Studying in more than one way just helps you learn French better, but 10 minutes a day with a beginner textbook like Assimil is just fine.

So how do you learn French while driving?

Podcasts and audio courses for beginning French

French was my first time self-studying a foreign language. If that’s the case for you too, you might want to begin with something a little slow-paced like Pimsleur French. Pimsleur is great for learning the pronunciation of French while driving your car. You simply repeat after the speaker on the audio. Do it out lound! The Pimsleur program will gradually make you revise new vocabulary and phrases, so you won’t forget. But don’t rely too much on Pimsleur for vocabulary, though. I recommend that you only use Pimsleur in the beginning, then progress on to other, more fast-paced courses as soon as you feel ready!

Other podcasts that can be useful to get you a little further than Pimsleur are Coffee Break French, Rocket French and FrenchPod101. These programs have their pros and cons and they each have their own style, so I recommend that you check out their free material and their trial periods to see if you like them. They also offer transcripts, lessons and exercises to a varying degree. Things you might want to do in your car, if you take a coffee break on the road!

Lear French in “chunks” with Glossika French

And then there’s Glossika French. Glossika is “mostly” an audio course. But I do recommend that you squeeze 10 minutes into your schedule now and then to study new sentences and then do the “reps” or revisions while driving your car.

Glossika is special in that it’s a very straight forward course. It’s very simple to use, but it’s actually based on some rather complicated ideas about language learning: There is absolutely no grammar lessons, exercises or drills with Glossika. The only thing you have to do is study new sentences daily – and revising them. With Glossika, you learn French through “chunks”. The idea is that after studying several hundred sentences which all use a specific grammatical rule, you’ll automatically and intuitively understand the rule. You actually learned your mother tongue the same way as a baby! Only with Glossika, all sentences are structured and organized in an order that gradually progresses – an advantage babies don’t get!

Doing revisions (Or “reps”) is where the learning really happens with Glossika. For each new sentence you learn, Glossika schedules several repetitions for you. Gradually further into the future. This means that even though you only study 5-20 new sentences per day, you get some 50-100 sentences to review. Sing along to French songs in your car. No, seriously!

OK, to some people, singing is not exactly they way they imagine that they’d learn French while driving. But think about it – when a catchy song is stuck in your brain, you just keep hearing it over and over like an earworm. You might even know the complete lyrics of the song by heart. And you don’t even like that song! This happens to me all the time, and it probably does to most people. Imagine cashing in on this. You could learn the lyrics of French songs by heart just from repeated listening. If you start singing along, you’ll learn a lot of French just from music. It’s also a great way of improving your pronunciation.

It can sometimes be a help to prepare yourself a little beforehand. Print the lyrics of some of my favorite French songs and listen to the songs while reading a long. Once is fine! Then try and sing along on your next car ride. You might not memorize it all, but try repeating the process the next day, and you’ll be stunned to see how much you already learned. After three or four read-troughs of a song, you’ll know the lyrics by heart, and you can start singing along while you drive.

If you don’t know what to listen to, try searching for “French songs” on YouTube. I can recommend the great classics of French Variété like Jaques Brel, Edith Piaf or Charles Aznavour. (Check out Jaques Brel’s haunting perfomance of his song “Amsterdam”) If you’re more interested in something more contemporary, Stromae writes awesome lyrics and catchy tunes. Go sing your heart out in your car!

Speaking to yourself

Another way to learn French while driving is self-talk. When you’re alone in your car, it’s the perfect opportunity to start using your French by speaking. Describe your surroundings to yourself. Make commentary on other people on the road. Or start voicing out what you’re going to do during the day, or what you’ve done. Speaking aloud to yourself is a great way to make your speech more fluid, activating your vocabulary and avoid constantly searching for words. And it’s easy! Don’t worry about making errors or mistakes. As long as you do other study activities, you’ll gradually stop making mistakes.

Listen to French language news

As your level improves, you can start listening to the news in French. At first you can try News in Slow French which is a great news program where a couple of French journalists discuss current events. In slow French. This can be a great way to start understand the kind of vocabulary used in newscasts. Listen to the slow news as much as you want, but be mindful of not getting used to the slow speed! You need to move on to real news before you get too comfortable with the news in slow French.

Audio books

When asking how to learn French while driving, there are numerous of different approaches. Some of them, we’ve already discussed, but one you get to a certain level, you want to tackle literature! Like it’s the case with English, the French language is extremely rich when it comes to literature. And audio books are getting popular in France, so you’ve got a lot to choose from.

As you approach literature in French, I recommend that you start listening to something that you’re already familiar with. Do you have a favorite novel that you’ve read and re-read several times? Look up the French translation as an audio book! Listening to Ken Follet in French gets both easy and enjoyable if you already know the story well. The same goes for Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter.
