Here I’ll be reviewing the Cobra KING F6 irons, intended to deliver forgiveness, feel and control through a progressive design construction and in a classic head profile.

The KING F6 earned gold medal honours on the Golf Digest Hot List for 2016.

How does the King F6 really perform when push comes to shove? Is it a viable option for higher handicaps? Is it lacking in any areas?

What are the features?

Cobra calls the KING F6 the “king of progressive iron sets”.

Under Tecflo construction, where multiple construction technologies are employed, each club in the set is designed to perform differently but optimally so that golfers can hit more greens and improve their proximity.

Here’s a run-through of the set:

3-5 Irons

These have a full-hollow design with face inserts that result in a low/deep center of gravity (CG), higher launch, responsive face and easy hit.

These long irons are made out of 17-4 stainless steel and have an enclosed cavity back.

6-7 Irons

These have a half-hollow design with a very thin face and added discretionary weight for optimal CG positioning.

These mid irons are designed to be easy to hit and accurate.

8-PW

These have a traditional cavity-back design with a low and deeper CG, enabling more spin, accuracy and control into the greens.

GW-SW

These have a specialty wedge design for optimal precision and versatility around the greens including in the rough and bunkers.

These clubs have a traditional blade-style muscleback head with wider grooves for more spin potential.

Other features and technologies include:

• a Speed Channel, an engineered channel positioned on the sole close to the leading edge and around the perimeter of the upper back cavity, increases face flexion at impact for more ball speed across the face.
• a new nickel chrome plating and a gunmetal PVD coating that enhance durability as well as the aesthetic.
• T.O.P. technology consisting of an engineered aluminum cap (in place of steel on dual-cavity hollow irons) which frees up 5 grams of discretionary weight and allows for the low/deep CG position mentioned above.
• a progressive groove design: V-Grooves on the 4-6 irons for reduced spin, U-Grooves on the 7-PW for more spin, and wedge-spaced grooves on the GW-SW for touch and high spin.
• deep perimeter undercutting that creates an unsupported face and contributes to more face flex and ball speed at impact.
• CNC Milled Grooves for more control, workability and spin.

How do these irons perform?

Distance Control

Raw distance results are about average for a game-improvement iron. What’s more important, however, is the exceptional above-average distance control even away from the center of the face.

Dispersion is nice and tight and the high launch allows for excellent control and soft landings into greens.

Slow swingers and/or golfers who tend to struggle with a low ball flight will likely gain both distance and accuracy, particularly in the longer irons. Stronger swingers who don’t need help with lift can modify their shaft to keep the flight down.

Forgiveness

A natural consequence of the low, deep positioning of the center of gravity is decreased directional forgiveness and some shot-shaping potential, but this isn’t necessarily bad.

The KING F6 isn’t going to keep your worst slices and hooks in the center of the fairway, but it will take some of the edge off, not to mention preserve a really good amount of ball speed and shot height.

I found these irons to be one of the best I’ve ever tested in terms of mis-hit distance, and that’s a pretty good distinction.

Ball Flight/Playability

I have no complaints. Typical ball flights with the stock shaft are high and straight over a pretty large area of the face.

Competent players can work shots to an extent; this capability increases as you move from the longer to the shorter irons due to the progressive spin design.

This iron is generally very stable through the rough, bunker and other trouble lies. Playability and versatility are impressive for a GI iron.

What about look, sound & feel?

The Look

The KING F6 iron set, being progressive, has top line thicknesses, offsets and sole widths (and hence forgiveness) that increase as you move from short to long in the set.

Relative to other game-improvement irons in its class, I would say that the top lines are a little thicker than what you would typically expect, but the sole widths and offsets are much more modest. The GI Fly-Z XL, for example, has more offset throughout the set.

This is one of the reasons I would say that the KING F6 iron is closer than most to the better-player side of the spectrum even though it is classified as game-improvement.

Shifting focus to the back and badge designs, we have a patterned background with some sharp Cobra labeling in a black/white/orange colour scheme.

I like the look personally and I think it would appeal to the majority of golfers. See the features section above for more details on the material construction and how the look changes through the set.

The Sound & Feel

The full-hollow irons sound less hollow and metallic than you would expect.

For the most part, the KING F6 irons have a more traditional sound at impact. Center strikes feel quite solid and mis-hits feel decent but distinctly different so that you get accurate feedback for troubleshooting.

Consistent with other aspects of the look and performance, the KING F6 sounds and feels more like a players iron than most other GI irons of its class, which is nice. The irons interact well with the turf.

Where should you buy these irons online?

Currently, the best place to find new and used KING F6 irons in all sorts of configurations at the lowest prices is eBay.

The Cobra KING F6 is an interesting offering from Cobra. In many ways, it doesn’t deliver what you might expect from a game-improvement iron, and leans a little bit towards the better-player end of the spectrum.

Nevertheless, with great forgiveness, solid distance, true feel, workability potential and a beginner-friendly ball flight, this is a high-quality iron that low and high handicappers could both find very appealing.

Weak vs. Week

Weak

The word weak is an adjective, meaning it describes nouns. If you are weak, you are not strong. Weak means that something is without strength or without much power.

More Tips

You can remember the difference between week and weak if you pay attention to spelling! Weak is spelled with an “a,” and week is spelled with two “e’s.” If weak only has one “e,” it isn’t as strong as the word week which has two “e’s!”

Pros: Two different options, a Pro version with a slightly smaller head and lower launch and spin, and a standard version with more forgiveness and an easier launch. The forged Hyper Speed Face Cup produces a smooth feel and more ball speed across the face.

Cons: The look of the Pro version turns heads, but even the better player might find it takes more “work” to hit great shots.

Bottom line: Both hybrids live up to the marketing promise of higher ball speeds and more distance even on shots not hit on the sweet spot. The X2 Hot Pro is geared for the better player and creates lower-launching, more-penetrating flight and the ability to easily work the ball in any direction. On the other hand, all golfers, even better players, should seriously consider the X2 Hot Hybrid and its slightly larger, more-forgiving face and higher-launching ball flight.

Overview

Callaway continues to launch new products that offer golfers two different versions to chose from — a Pro version for better players and a standard version designed for everyone — allowing golfers of every skill level an off-the-rack choice of clubs suited to their general needs. The X2 Hot Pro hybrid, with its smaller, tour-inspired head and Aldila Tour Green shaft, is designed for the better player looking for a lower-launching, lower-spinning hybrid. The X2 Hot hybrid, designed for every golfer, has a larger face, larger sweet spot and Aldila Tour Blue shaft that makes it easier to launch the ball in the air and generate distance even on mishits.

The Callaway X2 Hot Hybrid (above) and X2 Hot Pro hybrids have similar-looking club faces, but the body of the X2 Hot Pro is substantially slimmer.

For the first time, Callaway added its high-strength forged 455-carpenter steel cup face to the X2 Hot hybrids. Last year’s X Hot fairway woods proved that adding a forged face to a fairway wood means more distance for more players, and bringing that technology to hybrids was a natural progression. Through its precision forging process, Callaway claims it was able to increase the spring-like effect of the face not just in the center of the club, but all over the face, leading to increased distance even on mishits.

The X2 Hot hybrids are available in lofts of 19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees and come stock with Aldila’s Tour Blue 65 hybrid shaft in light, regular and stiff flexes. Stock swingweight is D0. The X2 Hot Pro hybrids come in lofts of 16, 18, 20 and 23 with an aftermarket version of Aldila’s Tour Green 75 hybrid shaft in R, S and X flexes. Stock swing weight is D2. Both hybrids will be available in stores Jan. 17 and sell for $199.

Performance

During any given round I might hit my hybrid off the tee, off the deck, from the rough or possibly even around the green, making the hybrid one of the most versatile clubs in my bag. I tested the X2 Hot and X2 Hot Pro hybrids over multiple sessions both on the course during rounds and on a Flightscope launch monitor on the driving range. My goal was to simply see if the ball flight and performance matched Callaway’s claims.

My first few shots with the X2 Hot hybrid were on the driving range prior to a round. It only took a few swings to realize this hybrid was going to play a big role in my bag. The X2 Hot hybrid was almost effortless to launch and produced a nice ball flight that wasn’t necessarily low and boring, but also wasn’t ballooning up in the air. The turf interaction on both clubs was very nice and I could play these hybrids out of the rough or fairway. My typical ball flight with a hybrid is straight to a slight cut, however with the X2 Hot hybrid, almost all my shots on the range and in testing produced a draw. I could still work the ball left to right, but it was clear these clubs have a least a little draw bias.

I really wanted the X2 Hot Pro hybrid to produce great results for me as well. I instantly liked the look of the smaller head and clean crown. At address, the Pro hybrid really looked and felt like an iron, but with a lot more power behind it. I only hit a few shots on the range before the round, but I could tell the ball flight was more penetrating, the spin was even lower than the X2 Hot hybrid and the distance was slightly longer. However, unlike the effortless launch of the standard hybrid, I was working hard on every shot.

Notice how much longer front to back the X2 Hot hybrid (above) is than the X2 Hot Pro hybrid. That moves the CG more rearward in the head, raising launch and spin.

Over the course of four rounds, I played the X2 Hot and X2 Hot Pro hybrids in as many on-course situations as possible. Each club continued to produce the ball flight and distance I expected. The standard hybrid was easily more forgiving, and by the middle of the week I had gained a lot of confidence in the club. The X2 Hot Pro hybrid continued to make me work for every good shot that I hit.

After on-course testing, I wanted to get on a launch monitor and confirm my theory that both hybrids live up to their marketing claims and confirm what I was seeing in the on-course testing.

Performance: Standard X2 Hot Hybrid

Over the course of an hour-long session on Flightscope, I rotated between both hybrids and threw out true mishits and outliers from the data. The majority of my swings produced shots off or near the sweet spot, not a dime size by any means, but consistent. I also tested shots off the heel and toe as well as high and low.

The X2 Hot hybrid is designed to launch easier but still have a nice penetrating flight with lower spin than Callaway’s previous hybrids. On average, when compared to the X2 Hot Pro, the standard hybrid generated 2 mph more ball speed, 4 more yards of carry and 1.5 yards more total distance. The launch angle was actually only a half-degree higher but generated 300 more rpm of spin and a peak height that was 2 yards higher. That said, the spin numbers were much lower than my current gamer and right inline with the range I would want out of a hybrid.

Almost every shot I hit with the X2 Hot hybrid had a draw ball flight and a very nice trajectory. What is most impressive and very important is that mishits off the heel and toe resulted in very little loss of ball speed and total distance, proving Callaway’s claim of a larger sweet spot. As expected, shots off the heel would likely minimize the draw tendency, but instead of producing a solid fade, it produced relatively straight shots or slight cuts. I really had to mishit this club to produce wildly offline shots.

Performance: X2 Hot Pro Hybrid

Last year’s X Hot Pro hybrids, while lower spinning than previous generations, still generated more spin than some better players were looking for. Callaway took this feedback and decided to lower the CG (center of gravity) by 40 percent in an effort to decrease spin and lower ball flight. It worked. While the launch angle was only marginally lower than the X2 Hot hybrid, the overall trajectory was lower while still resulting in nice flight time and carry numbers. My spin numbers were excellent and when properly struck, the golf ball jumped off the face and flew forever.

In contrast to the X2 Hot hybrid, the majority of my shots had less draw and I was more prone to hitting straight shots and cuts with the X2 Hot Pro hybrid. Mishits off the heel and toe still generated good ball speed, but it was much easier to mishit the Pro version. High shots and low shots on the face were more costly resulting in average distance loss of 4 to 5 yards.

Those were the averages. Where it gets really interesting is when I looked at the top five swings with both hybrids, based on carry and total distance, smash factor, spin and launch angle. The X2 Hot Pro hybrid outperforms the standard hybrid in every category except smash factor. I produced 4 more yards of carry and 7 more total yards, a straight to slight cut ball flight with a fractionally lower smash factor and lower launch. In fact, my three longest shots of the day were with the X2 Hot Pro hybrid and each shot was at least 4 yards longer than the longest X2 Hot shot. If I could be assured I would hit the ball almost perfectly every time, the X2 Hot Pro hybrid would be in my bag. However, it also means that the X2 Hot Pro hybrid is less forgiving, requires a lot more work to hit quality shots and truly is a club fit for the very best of players.

Both clubs outperform my current gamer in every category and generated average distance gains of 5 to7 yards. But more importantly, both clubs produced results I expected based on Callaway’s claims. For the better player, the Pro version should be very enticing, but even if you favor pro models, I would recommend also testing the standard version as a comparison. For the golfer looking for help getting the ball into the air and greater forgiveness on mishits, the standard version should go to the top of the list of hybrids to test.

Looks and Feel

From the moment I took the headcover off, I was instantly impressed with the look of these clubs. Both hybrids received a very noticeable redesign that went deeper than just a new paint job. With less pinching at the toe and the heel, less offset and more scroll lines on the face, the X2 Hot hybrids have a much more iron-like look than last year’s X Hot hybrids.

The darker grey color and darker Aldila shaft colors blend better in my opinion than the dark head and light shaft combination of last year’s X Hot hybrids. Both clubs have very clean, minimalistic crowns. The X2 Hot hybrid has a chevron alignment mark, which I like, while the Pro version is completely clean on the crown. Both clubs really look nice behind the ball at address and instill a lot of confidence prior to taking the club back.

The overall graphics package, from the clean crowns to the sweet-looking Aldila shafts, really give these clubs a nice blend of traditional and modern hybrid styling.

The forged face feels silky smooth at impact, especially off the sweet spot, and aided in the feeling that it was almost effortless to get the ball in the air. Plenty of feedback is also available on both heel/toe and high/low hits. I knew exactly where I made contact on each shot before even looking at the impact marks. Impact with the X2 Hot Pro, with its smaller head, felt more firm and iron-like while the X2 Hot hybrid felt slightly more springy like a fairway wood. These two clubs have distinctively different feels at impact and since feel is subjective, it is another good reason to test both clubs before making a decision.

Bottom Line

Callaway decided to rethink the look and feel of its hybrid line for this year and I think it hit a home run. The clean lines, forged face, larger sweet spot and premium shaft options all work together to create two hybrids that offer different characteristics for different types of golfers, but ultimately produce the same result: more distance on more shots.

Whether you are a high- or low-handicap golfer, both X2 Hot hybrids should be on your list of clubs to test this year.

The last hand of summer for the 2016 World Series of Poker was dealt just over a month ago at the Rio in Las Vegas and now we are just weeks away from able to relive all of the excitement of the year’s biggest tournament as ESPN begins its coverage of the WSOP on September 6 with back-to-back hours of the WSOP Circuit Global Casino Championship starting at 10 p.m. eastern on ESPN2.

Coverage of the WSOP main event begins at 8:30 PM eastern on Sept. 11. The second episode highlighting this year’s poker world championship will begin at 10 p.m. that night. Episodes will primarily air on Sundays, although the schedule will shift around a bit, but each and every week there will be seven straight weeks featuring two episodes totaling two-and-a-half hours of coverage. ESPN2 will host the first six episodes, with coverage shifting to the flagship channel at on Oct. 2.

Monday, Oct. 31 the live coverage (with a 30-minute delay) of the final table will begin at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. The following night the remaining players will return at 9 p.m. on the ESPN flagship channel to play down to a champion.

As has been the case since 2003, Norman Chad and Lon McEachern will be in the commentary booth calling the action for all of the WSOP coverage. They will be joined by Kara Scott, a veteran of the coverage for several years now herself, as well as strategy analysts Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak.

About Minimalist Golf Swing System

The Minimalist Golf Swing System (MGSS) includes the full-swing (Minimalist Golf Swing - MGS), plus the basic pitch/bunker, chip and putt strokes.

The MGS places the body in position to deliver the club at maximum speed, from an inside path and at a shallow angle. Together that translates to better distance, direction and trajectory.

It is the only golf swing to reduce backswing movement in order to cut out inconsistency, and also positions the joints according to their design-capabilities so that there is less scope for injury.

It has been developed based on 27 years of experience teaching golfers of all skill levels, plus an extensive academic graduate-level background of almost 6 years, in all aspects of human movement (kinesiology).

Kiran Kanwar - Profile

Kiran Kanwar was, in 1989, India’s first female golf teaching professional, after having won the 1983 National Championship - the All India Ladies’ Open Amateur Golf Championship. She has added to her lists of ‘firsts’ in the years since. She is the only woman to have developed a unique golf swing system for both the full swing and the short game - the Minimalist Golf Swing (MGS) System, and it is the only golf swing to have been frequently tested at all stages of its development, through research and peer-reviewed publications since 1994. The MGS System is the world’s only 100% biomechanically and anatomically valid golf swing - The Minimalist Golf Swing (MGS). It is based on her strong academic background - which includes a BS (physics, math) MS (sports science, nutrition) and PhD candidate (biomechanics, structural anatomy and rehabilitation sciences, sports coaching theory) - as well as over 29 years of experience teaching and researching the golf swing. This swing system can help any skill-level of golfer hit the ball further, straighter, higher, and with less likelihood of injury. Kiran has presented her golf swing research at three World Scientific Congresses of Golf (1994, 1998 and 2012) and has also presented the Minimalist Golf Swing at ‘Golfer and the DC’ - a seminar conducted by the Motion Palpation Institute to train chiropractors to treat golfers with injury. More recently, her research testing the efficacy of the MGS on a population of senior golfers will soon be published as a paper titled “Effects of a Golf Swing Intervention on Senior Golfers’ Ball Striking and Motivation to Play Golf” in the prestigious International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching. Kiran was the only woman to be a speaker at the PGA of Asia’s First and Second Golf Teaching Conferences of 2010 and 2011. She has also conducted workshops on Golf Swing Biomechanics for The LPGA, The PGA of America’s Gateway section and LPGA Mid-West section teaching professionals; for some of the Indian Tour (PGTI) players; and for students of the Masters’ Degree course in Sports Science at Logan College of Chiropractic. Kiran Kanwar has four Class A teaching credentials - the LPGA, The PGA (GB&I, from 1995-2016), the NGA of India (also Teaching Staff) and PGA of India (also Board Member). The Tribe’s fanged head may look similar to Odyssey’s #7, which was involved in our test, but thanks to its hollow head delivering a higher pitched impact sound, performance against the premium brands was very different.

This describes characters who appear to have their eyes shut constantly, except, perhaps, for a few instances of surprise or shock. Nevertheless, they still give every indication of being able to see — which implies that this characteristic is actually more of a pronounced squint.

This is an old device to imply wisdom; more recently, it’s been used as a device to show “wise guys”. This device, when used as such, is called “kitsune no me” in Japanese (“fox eyes” or “shifty eyes” in English).

A common variation of this trope is to make the character close his or her eyes into an arc rather than a simple horizontal line. Characters whose eyes are fixed in that position are generally optimistic and almost always unconditionally happy, but more often down-to-earth instead of ditzy. These characters may be prone to comic obliviousness, but outright stupidity is rare. The exact way the closed eyes are drawn can add a lot to this trope — representing anything from serenity, dignity, smugness, humor, indifference or even someone trying to fake any of those.

Finally, closed eyes are sometimes used to depict people who are down and out with their lives as a sign of depression.

Where Eyes Always Shut and Beware the Nice Ones overlap, the character’s eyes may open when it’s time to get dangerous, usually right before unleashing that Limit Break or entering a state of Unstoppable Rage. This is not uncommon among Affably Evil villains; if the villain always puts up a happy facade, expect those eyes to open when the Berserk Button is activated, just before that final transformation or ultimate attack is unleashed. Either way, the character’s now-visible eyes may follow other various Eye Tropes as well. Compare the Clint Squint. Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes is a downplayed trope, while in Blinding Bangs their eyes aren’t even visible.
